The city of Charleston is known for its vibrant food and beverage scene, and this summer is set to sizzle with an array of exciting events organized by Charleston Wine + Food. The organization, well-known for bringing together food enthusiasts from all over, is providing locals and visitors alike an opportunity to engage with the food and beverage industry through a programme of summer events aptly named the Sizzle.
The Sizzle comes as a result of efforts spearheaded by Alyssa Maute Smith, the Executive Director of Wine + Food. Smith expressed her desire to expand the organization’s activities beyond their annual five-day events in March, aiming for more year-round programming. Smith stated that these summer events will provide a fresh lens to interact with the local industry, guests, and consumers.
Keeping in line with the summertime theme, the Sizzle events are designed to offer fun and refreshing experiences during the scorching Charleston summer. Among these events is a ceviche-making class with renowned Chef Shaun Brian of Cuda Co., allowing participants to learn the art of making this classic chilled seafood dish.
For wine aficionados, a chilled red wine tasting is on the cards, hosted by Miles White and Femi Oyederian of Graft. This unique event provides an opportunity to discover more about wines and their influences – a must-attend session for those looking to broaden their understanding of the world of wines.
Additionally, the event series will also feature an ice cream social with Chef Evan Gaudreau of Mon Frére. This event is positioned as a novel way to beat the summer heat while indulging in a delicious staple beloved by all.
“The summer is such an enjoyable time for food,” says Smith. With a broader spectrum of fresh ingredients available beyond root vegetables and oysters, typically the focus in March, the summer allows for a more extensive exploration of seasonal products. The events are curated to celebrate the best of seasonal food and offer a novel foodie experience.
The Sizzle events are designed not just to keep locals entertained during the summer, but also aim to offer visitors a taste of the local food and beverage culture of Charleston. Tickets for these events are available online and will run through August.
Consequently, Smith’s innovative perspective is earning praise for its potential to transform Charleston’s local food scene during the sleepy summer months. By offering new ways for local residents and visitors to engage with the food and beverage community, these events demonstrate a concerted effort to rejuvenate Charleston’s culinary landscape.
