Charleston: A New Hollywood on the East Coast

Charleston, South Carolina, is quickly becoming a hotspot for film and television productions, thanks to its picturesque scenery and vibrant culture. With an impressive 95% of productions in South Carolina taking place right here in the Holy City, the city is transforming into a creative playground for budding actors and filmmakers alike. Recent hits like Outer Banks, Vice Principals, and The Righteous Gemstones have only illuminated how inherently connected Charleston is to the entertainment industry. It’s clear that the remote work era has opened new doors, making the local workforce more accessible to major studios.

The Shift in Film Production

Gone are the days when an aspiring actor needed to pack their bags and head to Hollywood. As College of Charleston acting professor Michael Smallwood notes, “It’s not the ‘80s anymore. You don’t have to go out to L.A.” This sentiment resonates with many young talents who find themselves captivated by Charleston’s charm and unique opportunities.

Linda Eisen, owner of Coastal Talent Agency, adds that South Carolina’s right-to-work status, combined with an array of stunning locations, makes it a favored choice for those looking to kickstart their careers in film.

Make Way for the Next Generation of Actors

Local talents like James Edward Fite, a 26-year-old Amazon delivery driver, are taking full advantage of Charleston’s thriving film scene. Fite has appeared in productions like Vice Principals and Mr. Mercedes and dreams of making it big in Hollywood without ever needing to leave his home city. “Charleston is becoming its own little mini-Hollywood,” he cheerfully exclaims.

Just 22 years old, Stella Reimer is another local making waves in the film world. Reimer has been involved in multiple productions while balancing her education. “It definitely brings you to places you may have never gone,” she reflects fondly, emphasizing the exciting opportunities she has encountered while working.

From Acting to Crew Roles

Not everyone in Charleston’s growing film scene dreams of being in front of the camera. Julie Doss, a preschool teacher who has experience in musical theatre, is diving into crew roles while cherishing her time as a background actor. “I’m open to whatever at this point,” she shares, showcasing her enthusiasm for being a part of the film-making process, no matter her role.

Then there’s Isabel Crews, a 23-year-old news producer who started her journey in background acting at just 14. She shares her insights with newcomers, warning, “It’s a hurry-up-and-wait kind of deal,” but reassures them that it’s a precious experience nonetheless.

Turning Dreams into Reality

At 63, Jill Paris has built a career from background acting, even creating a tour business based on her experiences in the film industry. “It was the biggest blessing for me to be in debt…and then I would have never ended up on Outer Banks,” she explains, emphasizing how the local film scene changed her life.

The Reality of Background Acting

While the idea of being an extra may sound glamorous, there are challenges that come with the territory. Long hours, unpredictable weather, and modest pay can make the job taxing. However, for these local actors, all agree that it’s worth it for the experience. “It’s not for the meek,” Paris chuckles, but she encourages everyone to give it a try.

A Bright Future Ahead

As Charleston continues to cultivate its reputation as a film-friendly city, many aspiring actors are hoping to secure roles that once felt out of reach. “For those aspiring actors just starting out can now audition for roles that they would have had a much harder time getting seen for in other markets,” Eisen points out, emphasizing the city’s growing stature in the entertainment world.

So, whether you’re a long-time resident or a newcomer, the world of film in Charleston awaits. With endless opportunities to explore, who knows? You might just find your path to stardom right here in the Holy City!
