Charleston to Host a Suite of Events from July 26-31

Charleston residents and visitors alike can look forward to an exciting line up of events from July 26 through July 31 this year. The weekend will feature everything from a tribute to Gullah-Geechee heritage to beach runs, surf contests, and a reggae rock concert. Here’s what to expect in Charleston this weekend:

Saturday, July 27: 20th Annual Sweetgrass Festival

The 20th annual Sweetgrass Festival will kick off at the Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park. This event seeks to showcase and celebrate the history, culture, and traditions of the Gullah-Geechee people, with a particular focus on the native sweetgrass basket art. Visitors can expect live music, art and craft exhibitions, and sweetgrass merchandise marketed by local basket makers.

Saturday, July 27: Isle of Palms Beach Run

The Isle of Palms Beach Run is also slated for the weekend. The course that winds along a path of hard-packed sand will begin and end behind The Windjammer. This event, which started as a four-mile Sand Shark Run in 1993, now comprises a 5K and 10K, as well as a 5K Walk.

Friday, July 26: JuLionfish Festival

Hosted by the South Carolina Aquarium, this festival celebrates the culmination of the three-month-long JuLionfish Derby. Attendees can look forward to inclusive evenings featuring lionfish filleting demos, local culinary delights, live music, and a silent auction. The event aims to raise awareness about conservation efforts and promote sustainable seafood practices.

Sunday, July 28: Slightly Stoopid and Dirty Heads Concert

Saturday, July 27-Sunday, July 28: 22nd Annual Folly Beach Wahine Classic

South Carolina’s only all-female surf contest, the Folly Beach Wahine Classic, draws around 250 competitors annually and is known as the longest-running girls’ surf contest on the East Coast. The competition, which is followed by a party for its participants, judges, and volunteers, seeks to promote camaraderie among surfer women of all ages and abilities.
