Charleston Entrepreneur Creates Kangaroo Cozies to Comfort Premature Infants and Support NICU Families

Charleston’s Heartwarming Venture: Kangaroo Cozies Helping Tiny Fighters

In the charming city of Charleston, South Carolina, a local entrepreneur is on a mission that tugs at the heartstrings. Julia Kramer, a College of Charleston alumna and a dedicated mother of two, has created a unique small business called Kangaroo Cozies, which is making waves by providing adorable and practical clothing for premature babies. With approximately 400,000 premature infants born in the United States each year, it’s clear that this is a much-needed venture that aims to provide comfort and style for the tiniest of fighters.

From NICU Struggles to a Dream Business

Julia’s journey into the world of premature baby clothing began when her son entered the world 13 weeks early, weighing just a delicate two pounds. “He was so tiny. I was going through this NICU journey and thought, ‘Wow, I can’t believe that there’s nothing that fits him,’” Kraemer shared, reflecting on the mix of emotions every parent in her position faces. The struggle of finding clothing that accommodates numerous wires and monitors, while also being cute, became her inspiration.

“Sometimes the first action you can take as a parent for your baby in the NICU is to clothe them

, and it feels so much more significant than many might realize,” said Julia. For three months, she faced the challenges of limited clothing options for her premature baby, and that’s when the idea for Kangaroo Cozies blossomed.

Comfort Meets Functionality

The clothing line specializes in adaptive onesies that cater specifically to the needs of premature infants. These onesies come equipped with fold-over mittens to prevent little hands from tugging at critical wires and tubes that are essential for their care. They also feature fold-over socks for easy access during heel pricks and extra room for monitors. Other clever adaptations include pockets designed to accommodate tubing securely, along with multi-way zippers and snaps that make diaper changes a breeze.

Kangaroo Cozies are thoughtfully available in three size categories: Newborn (for babies 7 to 11 pounds), Preemie (3 to 6 pounds), and Micro-Preemie (1 to 4 pounds). “Being able to provide clothing for a baby whose story is unique to them is incredibly special,” she remarked.

The Inspiration Behind the Name

The name Kangaroo Cozies stems from the practice of Kangaroo Care, a method encouraging skin-to-skin contact with newborns. Julia, who wasn’t allowed to hold her son for the first two weeks due to a no-touch order, recalls how the moment she could embrace her son meant the world to her. “Kangaroo Care became my favorite thing ever,” she said, emphasizing the profound bond formed during those tender moments.

Giving Back to NICU Families

In addition to creating adorable apparel, Kangaroo Cozies embodies a spirit of giving. With every onesie purchased, part of the proceeds goes to nonprofit organizations like Bee Mighty and Madelyn’s Fund. Bee Mighty supports families navigating the NICU experience, while Madelyn’s Fund helps alleviate unexpected funeral costs that some families face during such difficult times.

Julia passionately advocates for NICU families, stating, “They always say it’s a club that nobody wishes to be part of. To make a difference while being in that club brings tears to my eyes.”

Your Chance to Make a Difference

If you’re looking for a heartwarming gift this holiday season, a Kangaroo Cozie could be just what you need for the NICU baby, infant, or expecting mother in your life. Not only will you be providing comfort for a little one, but you’ll also be supporting families on their journey through the NICU.

Shop small, shop with heart, and help make a difference one tiny onesie at a time! You can find Kangaroo Cozies and support this inspiring initiative through their online shop.
