Charleston Man Arrested in Massive Drug and Gun Bust

In a recent turn of events in Charleston, South Carolina, a 25-year-old man is facing a staggering number of charges related to drugs and firearms following an extensive investigation that began several months ago. Montez Antowan Forrest, a local resident, has been charged with nearly two dozen offenses after police made significant discoveries during a search warrant execution that took place at an apartment complex.

Investigation Sparked by Tragic Overdose

The police investigation kicked off in February when officers responded to the unfortunate overdose of a 25-year-old man. This tragic incident highlighted the ongoing issues surrounding opioid use in the community. As authorities delved deeper into the case, they gathered evidence suggesting that Forrest was deeply involved in the distribution of illicit substances, particularly fentanyl.

Major Discoveries During Search

On Thursday, officers executed a search warrant at an apartment complex on Ashley River Road, and what they found was astounding. The police reported uncovering more than 400 fentanyl pills, alongside cocaine, cocaine base, marijuana, and various prescription medications. The situation escalated even further when they stumbled upon a stolen AK-47 and a handgun that had been reported missing.

A Long List of Charges

As a result of the evidence collected, Forrest faces a multitude of charges, including:

  • Trafficking fentanyl
  • Possession with intent to distribute cocaine
  • Possession with intent to distribute cocaine base
  • Possession with intent to distribute marijuana
  • Distribution of fentanyl
  • Three counts of possession with intent to distribute in close proximity to a school or park
  • Possession of a stolen handgun
  • Seven counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime
  • Seven counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon

Forrest was taken into custody right away and is currently being held at the Al Cannon Detention Center. His bond has been set at a whopping $280,000. It’s important to note that at the time of his arrest, Forrest was under the supervision of the South Carolina Probation Pardon and Parole due to previous drug-related offenses.

Charleston Police’s Efforts Against the Opioid Crisis

In light of these events, the Charleston Police Department has emphasized its commitment to tackling the ongoing opioid crisis in the area. Sgt. Chris Stinson remarked that the department is actively working on multiple fronts, including education, enforcement, and building strong community partnerships. Their goal is to address not only the supply of illegal drugs but also to support those suffering from addiction.

Support for Those Struggling with Addiction

If you or someone you know is grappling with opioid dependency, there is help available. The Charleston Center provides support 24 hours a day. They can be reached at 843-722-0100. Community resources are crucial as more individuals seek assistance in overcoming addiction.

Conclusion

This latest bust serves as a reminder of the urgent need to confront drug-related issues in Charleston.
