CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston head men’s basketball coach Chris Mack has made a significant addition to the team by signing Lazar Djokovic, a transfer from Xavier, for the upcoming 2024-25 season. Djokovic, a native of Serbia, brings valuable experience and skills to the Cougars roster after his freshman season at Xavier.
During his time at Xavier, Djokovic showcased his talent by playing in 28 games, with seven starts, including three in post-season play. He averaged 2.8 points and 2.9 rebounds per game in 14.4 minutes of action. Notably, Djokovic was named the Big East Freshman of the Week after a standout performance against Bryant, where he contributed 10 points, four rebounds, and two assists in a victory.
Coach Mack expressed confidence in Djokovic’s potential, referring to him as a player set for a tremendous career. Despite facing a setback due to a hand injury early in his time at Xavier, Djokovic’s competitive spirit and skills make him a valuable addition to the frontcourt. Coach Mack believes Djokovic will bring bounce, skill, and toughness to the team, making him a player to watch in the upcoming season.
Aside from his collegiate experience, Djokovic also made a name for himself on the international stage. He showcased his abilities at the FIBA U19 World Cup for Serbia, where he averaged 14.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 1.0 steals in seven games. Djokovic’s impressive shooting percentages, including 55% from the field and 38% from beyond the arc, highlight his versatility and scoring prowess.
Looking ahead, Djokovic will have the opportunity to reunite with his former teammate Djordje Curcic in Charleston. The prospect of playing alongside a familiar face adds to the excitement surrounding Djokovic’s arrival at the College of Charleston. Coach Mack is eager to see Djokovic’s development over the summer and believes his experience in the Big East conference will contribute to his growth as a player.
Coach Mack emphasized Djokovic’s ability to score at the rim, face up against defenders, and shoot from long range. However, it is Djokovic’s competitive nature and tenacity on the court that truly excites the coaching staff. The Cougars anticipate a successful partnership with Djokovic and are eager to see him flourish in the upcoming season.
As Lazar Djokovic joins the College of Charleston men’s basketball team, the anticipation and expectations surrounding his presence are palpable. With a promising collegiate debut at Xavier and international success with the Serbian national team, Djokovic brings a unique skill set and winning mentality to the Cougars. Fans and supporters eagerly await his debut on the court, as Djokovic looks to make his mark on the program and elevate the team to new heights in the upcoming season.
