CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. – The Charleston County School District has spent tens of thousands of dollars in the last five years on body cameras for its security management team. During recent school board meetings, security guards are often seen wearing body cameras which has led some to wonder why they are being worn and how much they cost the district.
The Charleston County School District has spent almost $65,000 on 44 body cameras for its security and emergency management team between 2019 and 2023. The largest order for the district, totaling over $30,000, was made in March of 2023.
Body cameras were initially introduced in 2019 for the district’s random search program, aimed at increasing accountability. Since then, these cameras have been utilized by a team of 48 individuals, including security staff and administrators.
The cameras are used during public meetings to ensure that encounters are handled with sensitivity and order. This additional layer of accountability aims to maintain confidence in the school district’s ability to conduct its business appropriately.
Comparing Charleston County with neighboring districts, it was found that Dorchester School District 4 and Berkeley County School District do not use body cameras at board meetings, unlike Colleton County School District which utilizes one camera that has never been activated at a meeting.
Michael Reidenbach, Charleston County School District’s Security and Emergency Management Executive Director, emphasized that each district faces unique challenges in addressing security concerns, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach.
With a focus on accountability and safety, the Charleston County School District continues to invest in body cameras to enhance security measures and maintain order during public gatherings.
