Charleston County Public Library Celebrates National Library Week with Exciting Community Events

Charleston is buzzing with excitement as the Charleston County Public Library (CCPL) gears up to celebrate National Library Week from April 6 to April 12! This year’s theme is all about highlighting how libraries foster connection, ignite imagination, and promote lifelong learning within the community. So, whether you’re a bookworm or just curious about what libraries have to offer, there’s something for everyone!

Branching Out in the Community

CCPL comprises an impressive 18 branches scattered across Charleston County, making it super easy for community members to access a wealth of resources. From free Wi-Fi to digital collections and computer access, these libraries are equipped to meet the diverse needs of all residents. Plus, they offer a variety of programs and services that cater to every age group, ensuring the entire family can find something fun and informative to participate in.

Stats That Will Impress You!

The library has been doing an amazing job, boasting some seriously impressive growth over the last year! They welcomed a staggering 1.3 million branch visits and saw an incredible 3.3 million books borrowed from their shelves. How about that? Furthermore, their outreach programs reached around 42,000 people, showing just how dedicated CCPL is to serving the community.

Resources that Make a Difference

Let’s talk about some standout resources that enhance the community’s well-being. One such initiative is the Kids Café, which provides free after-school snacks for students 18 and under at select library locations. This program, along with the Free & Fresh initiative, offers free fruits and vegetables at three branches without any sign-up hassle. That’s what we call a win-win!

More Than Just Books

CCPL is not just about reading; it’s also committed to workforce development. They offer Workforce Development Programs, Explore Passes to local attractions, fun Storytime sessions for young children, and even a unique Dial-A-Story service that lets people enjoy recorded stories over the phone. Now that’s creativity at its best!

Community Fridges and Fresh Produce

Another remarkable initiative by Charleston County is the Free and Fresh Community Fridge program, launched in 2021, which aims to combat food insecurity. In 2024 alone, over 23,000 people utilized this service, with fresh produce provided thanks to local donations and partnerships. A generous $10,000 grant from Roper St. Francis will help ensure these fridges stay stocked during those lean donation months.

A Hub for Discussion and Learning

Recently, the Charleston County Council stirred up some conversations about whether library board members should take an oath of office, which led to a public meeting drawing over 50 attendees. Folks gathered to voice their opinions, showing their support for unrestricted access to books, despite external pressures from political groups. With approximately 221,297 public library cardholders, the library proudly represents the diversity and vibrancy of our community.

Join the Celebration!

This National Library Week, Charleston County Public Library invites everyone to celebrate the unique role of libraries in our lives. Whether you’re visiting a branch, attending a workshop, or just stopping by to say hi, there’s no better time to rediscover the magic of libraries. Let’s make it a week to remember!
