A deadly car crash on Highway 78 in Charleston County resulted in one death and one critically injured, according to local authorities. The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the fatal incident.
The collision took place around 4:30 p.m. in the 10000 block of Highway 78. Initial investigations indicate that the vehicle was heading westward on the highway when it veered off the right side of the road, initially hitting a ditch and ultimately colliding with a tree.
The passenger succumbed to injuries and was declared dead at the scene, affirmed Alexis Douglas, spokesperson for the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office. The driver, who experienced life-threatening injuries, was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital by Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
Due to the severity of the crash and subsequent investigation, Highway 78 had been closed for over three hours. Traffic resumed as the highway was reopened approximately around 8:30 p.m.
As of now, the Charleston County Coroner’s Office has not released the name of the deceased victim.
The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office’s Traffic Services Unit appeals to any potential witnesses or individuals with information regarding the incident to come forward and contact the Sheriff’s Office at 843-529-5331.
While the roadway has been cleared and opened up for public use, the investigation continues as officials work to find the root cause of this tragic incident. As of now, it is clear that this unfortunate mishap has claimed one life and left another fighting for survival.
