Charleston County Officials Break Ground on Latest Affordable Housing Project

Charleston, SC – February 15, 2024

On Thursday, February 15th, Charleston County Councilmembers joined the Mayor of Charleston and City Councilmembers to celebrate the groundbreaking of Esau Jenkins Village. The complex, located on Maybank Highway on Johns Island, will feature 72 new affordable apartments for seniors 62 and older. Charleston County Council dedicated $3.26 million from American Rescue Act Funding in financial assistance to the developers to ensure the completion of this project. The assistance, also known as “gap financing,” was vital in bridging the funding gap to bring the project to fruition.

Councilmember Joe Boykin’s Statement

“I am thrilled to be a part of today’s groundbreaking ceremony,” said Councilmember Joe Boykin. “Esau Jenkins was a community pioneer to the sea islands, and it’s very fitting to name this complex in his honor. We’re happy to be able to provide the gap financing to enable senior residents to continue to live on the island despite rising costs.”

Project Timeline

The project is scheduled to be complete in the spring of 2025. This initiative aims to address the pressing need for affordable housing solutions for seniors in the Charleston community. With housing prices soaring across the region, projects like Esau Jenkins Village play a crucial role in ensuring that all members of the community have access to safe and affordable housing options.

Commitment to Affordable Housing

Charleston County officials have long been committed to expanding affordable housing options in the area. Esau Jenkins Village is just one of the many projects that the county has supported to address the housing crisis. By providing financial assistance and gap financing, the county is actively working to create more inclusive and diverse communities where individuals from all walks of life can thrive.

Celebrating Community Legacy

The decision to name the complex after Esau Jenkins, a well-respected community leader, honors his legacy and the significant impact he had on the sea islands. Jenkins was known for his advocacy for civil rights and education, making it all the more fitting to name a housing project that aims to serve the community after him. By recognizing Jenkins’ contributions, the project not only provides homes for seniors but also serves as a reminder of the importance of community leadership and service.

Looking Ahead

As construction begins on Esau Jenkins Village, the Charleston community eagerly anticipates the completion of this vital affordable housing project. The addition of 72 apartments for seniors will not only provide much-needed housing options but will also foster a sense of community and belonging for those who will call the complex home. Charleston County officials remain dedicated to supporting similar initiatives in the future, ensuring that affordable housing remains a top priority for the county.
