Charleston Cougars Take Down Marshall Thundering Herd with Strong Pitching

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston baseball team secured a commanding 5-0 victory over the Marshall Thundering Herd on Sunday, extending their winning streak to 2-0 for the season. The Cougars showcased a stellar performance on the field, led by impressive pitching from Aidan Hunter and Emmett Bice, who combined for eight strikeouts in a shutout effort.

Early Lead for the Cougars

The Cougars wasted no time taking the lead in the game, with Dariyan Pendergrass setting the tone in the first inning by doubling down the left field line. Pendergrass’s aggressive base running saw him steal third base before Cole Mathis walked, putting runners in scoring position for Trotter Harlan. Harlan delivered a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing Pendergrass home and giving the Cougars an early advantage on the scoreboard.

Expanding the Lead

Charleston continued to build on their lead in the second inning when Dylan Johnson smashed a homer to left field, marking his first home run for the Cougars. Tyler Sorrentino then scored on a Pendergrass double, increasing the lead to 3-0. The third inning saw the Cougars extend their lead to 5-0, courtesy of a Kevin Madden two-RBI double.

Dominant Pitching Performance

Aidan Hunter commanded the mound for the Cougars, allowing just one hit through three innings and keeping his pitch count low. Despite a brief scare with a one-out single from Marshall in the fourth inning, Hunter efficiently induced a double play to shut down any potential scoring opportunities. Hunter’s impressive outing lasted six innings before Emmett Bice took over in relief, maintaining the shutout with four strikeouts and allowing only one hit over three innings.

Key Players’ Contributions

Dariyan Pendergrass stood out for the Cougars, going 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles, a run, RBI, and a stolen base. Aidan Hunter’s strong pitching performance saw him strike out four batters while surrendering just three hits. Kevin Madden also made a significant impact, finishing 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs to help secure the victory for Charleston.

Upcoming Matchup

Charleston and Marshall are set to face off once again tomorrow at 2:00 p.m., with Connor Campbell taking the mound for the Cougars in the upcoming game. After an impressive showing in their previous matchup, the Cougars will be looking to maintain their winning momentum as they aim for another victory over the Thundering Herd.
