Charleston, S.C. – Cougars Roar Past Liberty in Midweek Showdown

In an exciting midweek clash, the College of Charleston Cougars emerged victorious over the Liberty Flames in a thrilling baseball showdown at home on Tuesday afternoon. Both teams were eager for a win coming off weekend sweeps, and the Cougars did not disappoint as they secured an 8-2 victory over the Flames.

Early Drama Unfolds

Liberty took an early lead in the game, notching a run in the first inning. However, the Cougars quickly turned the tide in the second inning, exploding for four runs to take the lead. Despite Liberty pulling one back in the fifth, Charleston remained in control throughout the game.

Impressive Performances

Freshman Hayden Thomas took the mound for the Cougars and showcased his talent yet again after a strong outing against Nebraska. While he faced some challenges with runners on base, Thomas limited the damage to just one run before exiting the game.

Aidan Hunter entered the game in relief of Thomas with the bases loaded and only one out. Hunter displayed great composure, striking out the next two batters to end the inning and stifle Liberty’s momentum.

Offensive Firepower

The Cougars’ offense came alive in the second inning, with Will Baumhofer, Dariyan Pendergrass, and Cole Mathis delivering key hits to put Charleston in the driver’s seat. Baumhofer’s RBI single tied the game, while Pendergrass and Mathis added to the lead with clutch hits of their own.

Andrew Duval took over pitching duties for the Cougars and delivered a stellar performance, holding Liberty to just one run over three innings. His efforts on the mound earned him the win, with Alex Lyon coming in to close out the game with a three-inning save.

Standout Players

Five different Cougars recorded two hits in the game, showcasing the depth of Charleston’s lineup. Pendergrass, Trotter Harlan, Avery Neaves, Cole Singsank, and Baumhofer all had multi-hit performances, with Pendergrass and Mathis leading the way with two RBIs each.

Looking Ahead

With the win over Liberty, the Cougars now turn their attention to a four-game series at Patriots Point, where they will face off against Penn on Friday at 4:00 p.m. Charleston will look to carry the momentum from their midweek victory into the upcoming series as they aim to continue their winning ways.

The Cougars’ strong performance against Liberty serves as a testament to their resilience and determination this season. With key players stepping up in crucial moments and the team firing on all cylinders, Charleston looks poised to make a statement in the coming games.
