Charleston, South Carolina – Cougars Fall in Extras After Huskers Rally

Charleston baseball experienced a heart-wrenching defeat as they fell to the Nebraska Cornhuskers in extra innings on Thursday afternoon. The game, which was the first of a four-game series, saw the Cougars take a commanding lead before a late rally by the Huskers sealed their fate.

Game Recap

The Cougars took an early lead after Charleston starter Hayden Thomas surrendered a run in the first inning but managed to shut down the Huskers’ offense for the next four innings. Charleston’s offense came alive, scoring two runs in the third inning, one in the fourth, and adding two more in the eighth to make it 5-1.

However, the Huskers staged a dramatic comeback in the ninth inning, capitalizing on an error and a pair of walks to load the bases with no outs. A two-RBI single from Riley Silva tied the game at five, sending it into extra innings.

In the tenth, Nebraska managed to scratch across a run, taking a 6-5 lead. Despite a valiant effort by the Cougars to bring the tying run to second base in the bottom half of the inning, the Huskers held on for a hard-fought victory.

Key Moments

Charleston’s Dariyan Pendergrass stood out at the plate, going 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Luke Wood also had a strong showing, finishing 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored. Cole Mathis, Trotter Harlan, Kevin Madden, and Avery Neaves each contributed with hits, with Mathis, Neaves, and Dylan Johnson scoring runs.

On the pitching side, Alex Lyon delivered an impressive performance, throwing four shutout innings of no-hit relief, allowing just one walk while striking out three batters.

Final Thoughts

Despite a strong start and a commanding lead for most of the game, the Cougars ultimately fell short against a resilient Nebraska team. The loss serves as a valuable learning opportunity for the Charleston squad as they prepare for their upcoming matchups.

Upcoming Game

Charleston and Nebraska are set to face off again tomorrow at Patriots Point at 4:00 p.m. as they look to bounce back from the tough defeat and secure a win in the series.
