Charleston, South Carolina: Cougars Drop Midweek with Bucs

Cougars Lose to Charleston Southern in Midweek Clash

The College of Charleston baseball team faced off against Charleston Southern in a midweek clash on Tuesday evening. Despite leading for most of the game, the Cougars ultimately fell to the Buccaneers by a score of 7-5. This marked CSU’s first win over Charleston since 2019, delivering a tough blow to the Cougars early in the season.

Strong Start for Cougars with Brooks on the Mound

The Cougars got off to a strong start with Daniel Brooks taking the mound for his first appearance of the season. The redshirt sophomore delivered an impressive performance, striking out two batters in his one inning of work while retiring the Buccaneers in order. Jeb Bradford provided solid relief pitching for Charleston, throwing three shutout innings and striking out four.

CSU’s Comeback in the Late Innings

Charleston took the lead in the fourth inning when Kevin Madden hit a two-run homer over the left field wall. However, Charleston Southern fought back in the later innings, scoring a run in the sixth and taking the lead in the seventh with a couple of key hits. The Buccaneers extended their lead in the eighth inning with more runs, including a three-run homer by Lucas Pringle.

Cougars’ Rally Falls Short

Charleston tried to mount a comeback of their own in the bottom of the eighth inning. Avery Neaves and Luke Wood both hit home runs to bring the Cougars within two runs of the lead. However, Charleston was unable to complete the comeback in the ninth inning, falling short as CSU secured the 7-5 victory.

Standout Performances for the Cougars

Despite the loss, several Cougars had standout performances in the game. Avery Neaves went 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run, two RBIs, and a double. Cole Singsank contributed with a 2-for-3 performance, including a walk and a run scored. Luke Wood added a solo homer to the Cougars’ offensive effort.

Up Next for the Cougars

Looking ahead, the Cougars will return home for a three-game series against Wofford. The series kicks off on Friday at 4:00 p.m., giving Charleston the opportunity to bounce back from their midweek loss and notch some wins in conference play.
