Charleston Cougars Drop Finale to Penn Quakers

CHARLESTON, S.C. –

Charleston baseball hosted Penn on Sunday looking to sweep the three-game series. Despite being out-hit all day, Charleston took a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth. That would not hold true though as a three-run, two-out rally by the Quakers in the ninth would allow Penn to avoid the sweep.

Penn jumped out in front in the third inning on an infield hit with runners on the corners. Charleston would come back in the bottom half to take the lead as Trotter Harlan brought in Dariyan Pendergrass on a fielder’s choice, a throwing error on the same play would also bring in Will Baumhofer to put the Cougars up 2-1.

In the fifth, Penn tied it back up on a two-run shot by Nick Spaventa. An inning later, Charleston jumped back out in front on a two-run shot by Cole Singsank, his second of the weekend.

Charleston’s pitching had done a good job keeping runs off the board despite allowing hits to the Quakers. Connor Campbell went 4.1 in the start, giving up three runs from 10 hits with four strikeouts. Garrick Murray and Drake Thames had combined for 2.2 innings of one hit, shutout ball. Emmett Bice kept that rolling into the eighth by posting a zero.

In the ninth, Bice remained in and after a lead-off infield single got a double play ball to put the Quakers down to their final out. Back-to-back, two-strike infield hits put the game in jeopardy again. Then a two-strike single by Jarrett Pokrovsky cut the Cougars lead to one before a seven-pitch walk loaded the bases. Ryan Taylor stepped up for Penn and ripped a two-RBI single and put the Quakers on top 6-5.

Key Cougars

Cole Singsank hit his second homer in as many days, finishing 1-for-3 with a two-run homer and a walk. Will Baumhofer went 1-for-3 with a pair of walks and a run scored. Dylan Johnson and Trotter Harlan each had an RBI.
