The College of Charleston baseball team secured a hard-fought victory on Tuesday as they clashed with Georgia Southern in a midweek matchup at the Eagles’ home turf. The Cougars displayed their offensive prowess with a stellar performance that featured key home runs and clutch hits to seal an 8-6 win over their opponents.
The game kicked off with the Eagles taking an early lead in the bottom of the 1st inning with a sac-fly, but the Cougars wasted no time in responding. Luke Wood’s two-run homer in the top of the second inning propelled Charleston into the lead, setting the tone for the rest of the game. Cole Singsank added to the power hitting display with a solo homer in the third inning to extend the Cougars’ lead.
On the pitching front, Charleston’s hurlers showcased their skills with solid performances throughout the game. Freshman Hayden Thomas delivered three innings of shutout relief, keeping the Eagles at bay and maintaining the Cougars’ lead. Chase Jarnagin made a crucial appearance in the 6th inning, escaping a potential scoring threat with a key double play and strikeout to stifle Georgia Southern’s momentum.
As the game progressed, the Cougars continued to pile on the runs with RBI singles and doubles to maintain their advantage. Kevin Madden’s RBI single in the 7th inning and RBI doubles by Cole Mathis and Trotter Harlan in the 7th and 8th innings, respectively, helped Charleston build a comfortable lead heading into the late stages of the game.
Despite a late surge from the Eagles in the 8th inning, which saw them narrow the gap to one run, the Cougars held their nerve and added insurance runs in the 9th inning to secure the win. Dylan Johnson’s sac-fly and closer Davis Aiken’s clutch performance on the mound sealed the victory for Charleston, with Aiken notching his fourth save of the season in style.
Key contributors for the Cougars included Luke Wood and Cole Singsank, who both delivered crucial home runs to kickstart the offense. Dylan Johnson stood out at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance and a pair of RBIs, while Kevin Madden, Cole Mathis, and Trotter Harlan also made significant offensive contributions with RBI hits.
With the midweek win under their belts, the Cougars now turn their attention to the start of CAA play, as they gear up to host North Carolina A&T on Friday. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Patriots Point, where Charleston will look to build on their recent success and continue their winning ways in conference play.
