College of Charleston kept its hopes alive for a CAA Tournament championship with an 11-1 victory over Delaware in an elimination game that was completed Sunday morning. The top-seeded Cougars (41-13) need to defeat No. 2 seed UNCW twice Sunday to add to their regular season title and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals. The first game against the Seahawks begins at 12:30 with a second game approximately 45 minutes later if Charleston forces the if necessary contest.
Luke Wood homered twice and drove in five runs in his first two at bats to help stake the Cougars to a 7-1 lead. Wood became the seventh different Charleston batter to homer twice in a game this season, and his three-run shot highlighted a five-run third that broke the game open. Aidan Hunter scattered six hits in seven innings and matched his season high with seven strikeouts to win for the seventh time this season. The only run he allowed to a Blue Hen team that had scored 31 runs in their first three tournament games came on a leadoff home run in the third. Emmett Bice struck out two in two innings of one-hit relief.
Wood followed a Trotter Harlan single in the second with his first home run of the contest. Harlan added an RBI single, and Avery Neaves doubled in a run to complement Wood’s round tripper the following inning. Harlan went 4-for-4 and Neaves added three hits to lead Charleston’s 15-hit attack. Neaves doubled twice to increase his season total to 24, and Harlan drove in two runs to enable him to reach the 50 mark for the second consecutive year. Cole Singsank retook the team RBI lead with 58 with his two-run single in the seventh, and Cole Mathis singled in the eighth to extend his hitting streak to 16 games.
