Former College of Charleston Cop Accused of Larceny and Misconduct Amidst Arrest

CHARLESTON, S.C – An ex-police officer from the College of Charleston is facing charges following allegations that he took a significant amount of money during an arrest process. David James Morrison is implicated with cases of grand larceny and misconduct linked to his role in law enforcement.

Morrison’s Arrest and Charges

Renee Wunderlich, a spokesperson for the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), reported that state agents apprehended Morrison on these charges. They believe that he uncovered a red bag with around $3,000 inside while searching an individual’s vehicle during an arrest. Morrison reportedly seized the bag and positioned it in his patrol car’s trunk, intending to utilize the cash for his personal use.

The Case Development

According to an affidavit, the owner of the bag did not find it in his vehicle or amongst his belongings held at the jail when he reclaimed his towed vehicle. Upon questioning about the bag, Morrison reportedly denied having knowledge of it. However, he later returned the bag to the College’s police station, claiming that he had found it near a dumpster.

The Return of the Bag

The stolen bag, along with the remaining money, was consequently given back to its rightful owner. Morrison, when questioned by the SLED investigators, confessed that he was facing financial hardships and needed the money. These testimonies and the circumstances around the situation led to the pressing of charges against Morrison.

Current Status of Morrison

Morrison was officially booked into the Charleston County Detention Center on June 13. While he has since been released on bond, the allegations’ gravity and the evidence against him could lead possibly to severe repercussions, signaling an alarming violation of trust and duty from a person in a law enforcement position.

Unfolding Story

The case involving the former officer continues to develop, as investigations dig deeper into the circumstances that led to the arrest and the actions following it. This case prompts a necessary reflection on morality and ethical standards within law enforcement and calls for better scrutiny and transparency in law enforcement practices.
