CHARLESTON, S.C. – Sometimes, the sea can be a beautiful but unpredictable place. Unfortunately, this was the case for two boaters who have been reported missing after their catamaran was found overturned off the coast of Brunswick, Georgia, this past Sunday.
David Wickenden, 54, and Charles Andrade, 60, set sail from Connecticut with hopes of enjoying a scenic journey all the way down to St. Augustine, Florida. However, their trip took a tragic turn when the Coast Guard received a distress call about a capsized 50-foot catamaran approximately 65 miles east of Brunswick. This alarming report came in from a crew member aboard the “Salty Intentions,” who spotted the vessel turned upside down.
The search for the two missing men began immediately, with rescue crews swinging into action. Over the course of 77.45 hours, the Coast Guard crews combed through an area covering more than 9,140 square miles! For some perspective, that’s about the same size as the entire state of Vermont!
As the hours turned into days, hopes began to wane, and the search grew increasingly risky. Cmdr. Jason Erickson, the Coast Guard Sector Charleston search and rescue mission coordinator, shared just how challenging the decision to suspend the search was. “The decision to suspend a search is always difficult to make and never done lightly,” he stated. “When we send our rescue crews out, it is with great hope we can bring people home safely. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the missing boaters during this incredibly difficult time.”
The news sent waves of heartbreak through their communities, with family and friends rallying together, hoping for the best while fearing for the worst. In times like these, the sense of community shines through as people come together to offer support and share fond memories of the missing men.
Wickenden and Andrade are remembered as adventurous spirits who loved the great outdoors. Those who knew them spoke of their enthusiasm for sailing and exploring the world around them. The tragic event has left many reflecting on the joys of life and the unpredictability that comes with it.
This incident is also a potent reminder of the inherent risks that accompany boating and water activities. The Coast Guard emphasizes the importance of safety protocols, such as checking weather conditions, ensuring life jackets are on board, and having a solid communication plan before setting out on any maritime adventure.
As the search comes to an end, the focus will shift toward supporting the families during this time of grief. The loved ones of Wickenden and Andrade will carry on their memories, cherishing the joy and laughter they brought into the lives of those around them.
It’s a waiting game now for their friends and families as they hold on to hope and process this devastating event. The Coast Guard’s heartfelt words echo in the minds of many: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families.”
For those of us who aren’t directly affected, it’s a reminder to cherish our days, stay safe, and look out for one another, especially when out on the water where the tranquility can quickly turn to turmoil.
