Annual Clean-up Initiative Commences in Charleston Downtown After College Move-Out
In Charleston, South Carolina, the city has geared up to execute its annual clean-up procedure to remove trash and bulk items from the cluttered streets of its downtown area. The operation is launched in response to an influx of lease turnovers from departing college students.
Operation Move-Out on its Way
The City of Charleston’s Livability and Tourism Department is spearheading this project, officially denominated “Operation Move-Out.” The operation is scheduled to start on July 31 and conclude on August 5. Dan Riccio, the City’s Chief of the Community Services Section, communicated that the initiative is integral to maintaining the city’s quality of life for both residents and visitors.
“Operation Move-out is an essential annual effort designed to enhance quality of life for Charleston residents and visitors alike,” Riccio stated. He noted that the active management of trash disposal prevents waste accumulation on the city’s streets and sidewalks, therefore, ensuring a clean, safe, and pleasant environment for all residents and visitors.
City’s Instructions for Proper Disposal
The City has rolled out instructions for tenants to follow during this clean-up initiative. Among the guidelines, the City urges tenants to place their trash items on their curbs no later than 7 a.m. for a same-day pick-up service.
The suggested guidelines include:
- Solid waste should only be placed in the green collection bin.
- Recyclables should exclusively go in the blue collection bin.
- Large household items should be neatly stacked at the curb.
- Small personal items and clothes should be put in clear bags.
- No electronic items are to be placed at the curb and must be carried to the recycling center by the tenant themselves.
Additionally, the city is encouraging tenants to donate their gently used items to donation centers and charities to promote the notion of sustainability and reuse.
