In an epic display of culture and festivity, the Holy City Charleston threw a significant series of events and parties to mark Cinco de Mayo in 2024.
Throughout May, a Cinco de Mayo-themed 5K was held, attracting residents and visitors to either walk, run, or jog for a good cause – Lyme Disease awareness. As part of the registration process, participants were given the option to log their miles and timing, and a unique Cinco De Mayo race medal was awarded upon completion. Notably, 15 percent of the registration fees were donated to the Global Lyme Alliance, which is continually striving to eliminate Lyme and other tick-borne diseases.
On May 4th, a day before the actual event, Whiskey Run Sports Bar & Grill in North Charleston hosted a Cinco de Mayo Poker Run to support Fire & Iron Station 28, Chucktown Crew. The same day, a grand Festival happened at the Cruise Terminal Downtown Charleston, boasting live music and dance exhibitions. Authentic cuisines from various Latin countries were served, including Mexico, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Colombia.
For visitors seeking a unique blend of festive celebration and a taste of Mexican cuisine, Charleston offered a Tacos and Tequila Bar Crawl and the Charleston Margarita & Mimosa Fest. Participants of the Bar Crawl toured the city’s prime locations, indulging in scrumptious tacos and refreshing margaritas.
The following day witnessed the 2024 Lowcountry Street Taco Festival in Ridgeville, where visitors could satiate their taste buds with street tacos offered by dozens of authentic street food trucks while enjoying live music and arts & crafts vendors.
May 5th, the official Cinco de Mayo, observed the official bar crawl. Participants enjoyed free entry to over four venues, multiple free drinks or shots, exclusive low drink specials, and select food specials. There were also live music and bands at certain venues.
Various restaurants across the city, including Lewis Barbecue and Rancho Lewis, offered $5 Green Chile Margaritas all day. They also offered a wide range of food options. Similarly, Mex 1 West Ashley held a Block Party, featuring live music, multiple outdoor bars, food tents, and local vendors. Mex 1 Sullivan’s Island and Mex 1 Mount Pleasant also had similar celebrations.
This exclusive event included festive decorations, bites and drinks, and music throughout the day. Chef Damian Sandoval served up Mexican street food at Coterie with cocktail specials from Lalo Tequila. Among the festive specials was Maya, offering a collaboration with Tequila Ocho for specialty cocktails and bites all day.
For art enthusiasts, a unique event named “Art Ink and Drink” was hosted at Frothy Beard. Organized by published artist Sherri Welser, the event used alcohol inks to create stunning Margarita glasses.
Firefly Distillery offered visitors a Sunday Brunch on Cinco de Mayo complete with Firefly style margaritas, a food truck, live DJ music and lawn games for all ages.
Overall, Cinco de Mayo 2024 was a rave event in Charleston, as locals and visitors alike immersed themselves in the vibrant cultural festivity and the unique flavor of Mexico.
