Charleston’s Exciting New Culinary Venture: “Now We’re Cookin’”

In the heart of Charleston, excitement is simmering as local chef Lauren Furey gears up to launch her very first cooking show titled “Now We’re Cookin’”. Scheduled to debut on public television’s SCETV this October, the show promises to bring an array of delightful, family-style meals right into your living room. Set to tantalize the taste buds of Charleston residents and viewers beyond, this series aims to ignite a passion for cooking with locally-sourced and seasonal ingredients.

The Show’s Launch and Vision

Mark your calendars for October 8, as “Now We’re Cookin’” will be available not just on television but also online via scetv.org, the SCETV app, Facebook, and YouTube. Furey, an adept private chef and graduate of the College of Charleston’s Schottland Scholars program, expressed her enthusiasm for reaching out through the world of food.

Reflecting on her childhood, Furey fondly recalls her admiration for public broadcasting. This passion intersected with her culinary journey when she reached out to SCETV, inspiring fruitful discussions that led to the show’s creation. “They always said, if you ever have an idea, just give us a call,” she explained. After five years of honing her skills at various events, Furey felt ready to establish her culinary identity and share her passion for cooking.

Behind the Camera: Recipe Development

Furey has crafted six recipes designed to not only taste delicious but also look spectacular on camera. Working closely with the show’s producers, each short episode—running around **8 to 10 minutes**—has been thoughtfully structured, with broadcast episodes combining three digital segments. The goal? To create approachable and joyous dishes that inspire viewers to reach into their kitchens.

With a mix of Italian and Southern recipes, each dish is aimed at serving approximately four people, making them perfect for family meals or gatherings with friends. “These recipes are really colorful, and they’ll make you happy when you’re making them,” Furey shared. Her philosophy is all about using accessible ingredients like cornmeal, pasta, and capers that viewers might already have stocked in their pantries.

A Culinary Philosophy Shaped by Experience

Furey’s culinary philosophy is deeply influenced by her time spent apprenticing under the esteemed Charleston chef and cookbook writer Nathalie Dupree. During her apprenticeship, she learned the art of cooking with what’s available, fostering creativity and improvisation in the kitchen. “She would always be like, ‘Oh, see what’s in my fridge, and we can build a recipe from there,’” Furey noted, highlighting how this practical approach shaped the recipes featured in her show.

The Heart of the Show

At its core, “Now We’re Cookin’” aims to spread joy through the universal language of food. “The goal of the show is … and it’s cheesy, but it’s true,” Furey chuckled. “How many people can we make smile through a show about food, you know?” It’s this heartfelt aspiration that drives her to share her knowledge and passion with others.

Celebrate the Launch!

To kick off this culinary journey, you’re invited to a special viewing and dinner party on October 6 at Wild Common, providing an excellent opportunity to celebrate Furey’s new venture. Don’t miss out on this exciting occasion; follow her on social media for more details!

With “Now We’re Cookin’,” Lauren Furey is set to invite everyone into her kitchen, turning home cooking into an enjoyable and fulfilling experience. Prepare to be inspired and happy cooking!
