April 27, marks Independent Bookstore Day, a nationwide celebration of independent bookstores bringing authors and readers together. This year, three bookstores from the culturally rich city of Charleston join this enthusiastic event encouraging everyone to rally behind their local economy and literature. The participating bookshops include Itinerant Literate Books, Buxton Books, and Philosophers & Fools.
Itinerant Literate Books, situated in North Charleston, leads the city’s charge in this annual literary celebration with a remarkable lineup of events and promotions. According to Danielle Raub, Itinerant Literate’s Marketing Manager, the bookstore acts as a crucial conduit for readers and authors, reinforcing their community through shared interests and friendship.
In an engaging twist, the all-day celebration at Itinerant Literate revolves around a mystery theme. Visitors can expect to meet an author panel solely dedicated to thriller, crime, and mystery genres featuring writers such as AF Winter, Joan Brady, Brad Crowther, and Shayla C. Freeman. Furthermore, there will be a family-friendly mysterious storytime session, a book swap, and an entertaining ticketed murder mystery party in the evening that promises to engage the attendees in solving a mystery involving secrets and clues.
Buxton Books adds a unique flavor to the Independent Bookstore Day celebrations with custom typewritten poems by two local poets. From 1 until 2 p.m., Jammie Huynh will be enchanting attendees with her custom compositions, followed by Asiah Mae, the Poet Laureate from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. The store also plans to engage its audience via Instagram giveaways and a hidden “Golden Ticket” quest inside the store, offering 12 free audiobooks through Libro.fm to the lucky finder.
The recently inaugurated bookshop-bar, Philosophers & Fools, eagerly joins the day’s proceedings with its debut in the Independent Bookstore Day celebrations. This downtown delight launched by Jenny Ferrara and Michael Bourke is envisioned as a warm meet-up point for book enthusiasts to share dialogues over a wide selection of more than 5,000 titles accompanied by wine and coffee. The bookstore-bar looks forward to making the most of its first-ever bookstore day with special deals and shopping bonuses.
The shared objective of these Charleston bookstores on Independent Bookstore Day is to cultivate reading cultures, strengthen community ties, and to extend support to each other in upholding the sanctity of the written word. The dedication of these local bookshops has only added to Charleston’s vibrant and inclusive literary scene. To quote Danielle Raub, “Bookstores bring people together and make us feel connected…Bookstores are just a great way to do that.”.
