A horse carriage accident involving an unoccupied parked car occurred on Thursday afternoon in downtown Charleston, provoking an official statement from the carriage company, Old South Carriage Company.
The company, after the incident, released a statement around 5 p.m., saying, “At approximately 2 p.m. this afternoon, one of our carriages was involved in a collision with a parked vehicle on South Battery Street. We are in the process of gathering all available details to determine the cause of the incident. One of our drivers was hurt as a result and is currently being treated at MUSC. Further, a passenger was taken to the hospital out of precaution.”
In assuring the public about the well-being of other passengers and their draft horse Wyatt, the company continued, “Thankfully, our draft horse Wyatt and no other passengers in the carriage suffered any injuries. We will continue to monitor the situation and communicate with city officials and affected property owners. The safety of our animals, passengers, and staff remains our top priority.”
According to city police, the accident closed a portion of South Battery Street, between East Battery and Church Streets while investigators worked on-site. It was reported that the horse carriage ran into a parked, unoccupied Porsche. The crash resulted in the carriage driver being knocked off the carriage. In the commotion, the horse escaped, running away with the carriage, and further struck a vacant Charleston Police Department cruiser close to Meeting Street. There were 11 passengers on the horse carriage at the time of the incident.
The carriage driver and one passenger were transported to the hospital, with injuries that are not life-threatening. The police issued a “Downtown Traffic Alert” by sharing on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. Police confirmed they are actively working on the investigation while ensuring the safety of the victims and determining the extent of their injuries.
The investigation into the incident remains active. Authorities are working tirelessly to gather full details. Hence, they will interpret what caused the accident and ascertain who is responsible.
In conclusion, it is unfortunate whenever accidents of such nature happen, but it is reassuring to know that no lives were critically endangered. The Charleston community will await the outcome of the investigation to allay further fears and ensure similar incidents do not happen in the future. The Old South Carriage Company is known for its commitment to safety and professionalism, and this incident only strengthens its resolve to ensure the safety of its staff, passengers, and animals.
