Charleston Celebrates History with Record-Breaking Carolopolis Awards Ceremony

Charleston, known for its rich history and vibrant culture, recently rolled out the red carpet for the 71st Annual Carolopolis Awards. The Preservation Society of Charleston (PSC) hosted this remarkable event, which took place on a Friday that overflowed with excitement and recognition for historical projects in the area.

More Awards Than Ever

This year was a standout, as the PSC handed out a whopping 27 awards, marking the highest number received since 1995! Talk about celebrating hard work and dedication! The event saw an unprecedented interest, proving that Charleston’s commitment to preserving its historical charm continues to engage the community.

Milestone Moment for the Carolopolis Awards

1,500th award since the program’s inception in 1953! What a way to highlight all the amazing restoration and preservation efforts that have transformed Charleston over the decades. The awards showcase the city’s steadfast dedication to maintaining its historical essence.

Diverse Projects, One Goal

The President and CEO of the PSC shared how this year’s awards highlighted the diverse array of projects, ranging from charming modest cottages to grand military warehouse transformations. It’s a true testament to the versatility of Charleston’s architectural history! No matter the size or scale of the project, the focus remained on preserving the character and authenticity of the area.

Spread Across the Lowcountry

The Carolopolis Awards went beyond the Charleston peninsula. Projects were recognized in various locations, including North Charleston and Sullivan’s Island. To add a cherry on top, the first-ever awards were distributed on Daniel Island and Folly Beach, showcasing the diversity of the projects throughout the Lowcountry.

New Construction and Resilience Recognized

Among the fantastic projects, St. Clare of Assisi Catholic Church on Daniel Island received a coveted New Construction Award, proving that even new developments can blend beautifully with historical principles. On Folly Beach, the residence at 508 East Ashley Avenue snagged a Resilience Award, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable practices in historic preservation.

Charleston: Birthplace of Historic Preservation

Charleston proudly holds the title of being the birthplace of the American historic preservation movement. The PSC’s work aims to lead conversations about preservation, promoting a focus on repair instead of demolition or replacement. In a world of fast-paced change, it’s heartening to see such vigor for maintaining what truly matters.

A Multi-Faceted Awards Program

The Carolopolis Awards encompass five categories, making it inclusive for various types of projects: Exterior Awards, Pro Merito Awards, New Construction Awards, Resilience Awards, and Interior Awards. These categories ensure that both private and public projects receive recognition for their contributions in maintaining the historical character of Charleston and the beautiful Lowcountry.
