CHARLESTON, S.C. – This Friday, the beautiful Lowcountry is feeling the effects of Helene, and it’s causing quite a stir! With numerous businesses, schools, and government offices suspending operations or delaying their schedules, many locals are finding their routines turned upside down.
School Disruptions
Education has taken a hit, too. All classes at Trident Technical College will be held virtually today, bringing a twist to the usual face-to-face meetings. Similarly, Charleston Southern University has switched gears to online learning for the day. While some students may appreciate being able to attend classes from home, others will surely miss the buzz of campus life.
County Government Actions
In Colleton County, government offices are closed, with all nonessential services saying “see you on Monday.” So if you planned a trip to the local government office, you may have to reschedule. With these adjustments in play, it’s a good reminder that safety comes first!
Delayed Openings in Berkeley County
Over in Berkeley County, it’s not all bad news. Facilities will be opening a bit late, with a two-hour delay. That means places like the Courthouse, Berkeley Animal Center, Cypress Gardens, and all library branches will start their day at 10 a.m. So, if you were hoping to access any of these services early, you’ll need to wait a bit longer. The City of Hanahan and the Town of Moncks Corner are also opening their administrative offices at 10 a.m., with trash pickup schedules affected as well.
Charleston County Sees Closed Libraries
Charleston County hasn’t been spared either. Most county offices and facilities will open at noon today. However, some libraries including Folly Beach, McClellanville, and St. Paul are closing for the day. The rest will join in at noon, so if you had plans to check out a book or two, it might be best to hold off until later.
Municipal Adjustments
On the island of Isle of Palms, both City Hall and the Recreation Center will also have a delayed opening, that is, until 10 a.m. This caution extends to the Town of James Island, which will open offices at noon due to heavy winds.
First Baptist School Schedules Changes
In a further shift, First Baptist School of Charleston has canceled school, along with any athletic activities that were on the docket today. It’s certainly not how anyone expected their Friday to go!

Meanwhile, in Williamsburg County, all government offices are closed, and recycling sites are not taking visitors today. Dorchester County follows suit with a two-hour delay for its government offices, which will open at 11 a.m. Convenience sites are running their usual hours, so there’s still some ease for residents hoping to dump their trash.
If you’re trying to gauge what’s happening in Georgetown County, they’ve canceled all athletic events scheduled for Friday. The county’s recycling convenience centers are also closed due to power outages, so plan accordingly if you had a recycling run scheduled.
