Charleston Beach Police Prepare for Spring Breakers

Charleston Beach Police Mobilize for the Arrival of Spring Breakers

In anticipation of the influx of students during the spring break, law enforcement agencies in Charleston, South Carolina, are bolstering safety measures. The popular beaches such as Folly Beach and the Isle of Palms are expected to draw large crowds of students celebrating their spring breaks during the months of March and April.

Beach Regulations Enforcement

Police at both Folly Beach and the Isle of Palms are strictly enforcing city and state laws. According to Folly Beach Police Chief Andrew Gilreath, they are keen on ensuring that all visitors observe the rules, intending to begin the tourist season on a peaceful note. He sends out a stern warning to prospective spring breakers, urging them not to tag a jail term along with their spring break experience.

In both Folly Beach and the Isle of Palms, beach drinking is prohibited, and lawbreakers can expect hefty fines. Sgt. Matt Storen of the Isle of Palms Police Department confirmed that fines for drinking on the beach range from $128 to $1,087. Glass containers and smoking on the beach are also not permitted and frequently violated.

Additional Law Enforcement

To effectively manage the anticipated large crowds, additional personnel from nearby agencies are expected to aid the two moderately-sized police units. It is emphasized that any behavior that disrespects the beaches and breaches the rules will lead to arrests, hefty fines, or both, depending on the situation.

K-9 Unit Assistance

Isle of Palms Police emphasized their enhanced drug detection and enforcement strategy with the active involvement of their K-9 unit. Sandy, the K-9, is expected to play a vital role in narcotics detection and traffic stops, supporting police efforts to keep the streets clean. The presence of the K-9 unit also intends to serve as a deterrent to potential offenders.

Beach Safety Measures

While no curfews or checkpoints are cited at either beach presently, there will be an increased presence of code enforcement officers and traffic patrol units between the beach itself and the roads. These proactive measures aim to maintain the safety, peace, and cleanliness of the two popular Charleston beaches.
