Men’s Basketball Takes on Monmouth in CAA Quarterfinals – College of Charleston Athletics

Washington, D.C. – The top-seeded College of Charleston men’s basketball team is gearing up to face off against No. 8 Monmouth in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Jersey Mike’s CAA Men’s Basketball Championship.

Storylines

The College of Charleston men’s basketball team clinched the No. 1 seed in the 2024 Jersey Mike’s CAA Men’s Basketball Championship after securing the program’s first outright regular-season title since 2003 and the first-ever in the CAA. Under the leadership of head coach Pat Kelsey, Charleston became the CAA’s first outright regular-season champion in four years. The Cougars are coming into the tournament on a nine-game winning streak, which ranks as the third-longest in the country as of March 5th. Additionally, Charleston has triumphed in six consecutive road games, marking them as the sixth most successful team in this aspect in the nation.

Reyne Smith, the reigning CAA Player of the Week, is a player to watch as he enters the tournament riding a wave of success. In recent wins over Campbell and Hofstra, Smith showcased his prowess by going 16-for-26 and sinking a remarkable 10 three-pointers in a single game. His stellar performances earned him the distinction of being the first player in CAA history with multiple career games of 9+ three-pointers.

Charleston also received six All-CAA awards, with Pat Kelsey bagging the Coach of the Year accolade and Bryce Butler being named Sixth Man of the Year. Ante Brzovic, Reyne Smith, and Ben Burnham were recognized on the All-CAA first, second, and third teams respectively, with James Scott closing out the honors on the All-Rookie team.

Last Time Out vs. Monmouth

Charleston’s previous encounter with Monmouth resulted in a resounding 94-83 victory on January 13 at TD Arena. Kobe Rodgers and Ante Brzovic showcased their skills in this matchup, contributing significantly to the team’s success. The Cougars outperformed Monmouth, particularly in bench scoring, where they dominated 38-8.
