Charleston Baseball Wraps Up Series with App State and Seton Hall

In a series that had fans on the edge of their seats, the College of Charleston baseball team faced off against App State and Seton Hall last weekend, showcasing a mixture of triumph and challenges at Patriots Point.

Friday’s Thrilling Opener

The excitement kicked off on Friday night when the Cougars squeaked out a narrow 5-4 victory against App State. It was a nail-biter for sure! Sophomore Brent Gibbs was on fire, going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, grabbing everyone’s attention with four infield singles – a dazzling career best for him!

On the mound, junior Jake Brink had an impressive showing, racking up a career-high seven strikeouts over six innings. Although he didn’t snag the win, his efforts required lots of high-fives from the cheering crowd. Redshirt junior Alex Lyon and senior Davis Aiken followed, with Aiken closing the game in style, earning his second save of the season after a quick and tidy ninth inning.

Home Runs and RBIs

Graduate Avery Neaves was the star of the evening as well, smashing a two-run home run in the first inning and finishing the game with a whopping four RBIs. He also drove in another run in the seventh, marking a truly productive day. Freshman Dariyan Pendergrass wowed the crowd with a triple, just a home run shy of a cycle!

With the win, the Cougars improved their record to 8-4 for the season, while App State fell to 6-7. The Cougars’ history against App State also grew even brighter, marking an overall record of 36-13 against them.

Saturday’s Setback

13-0 loss to App State. Ouch! Despite the setback, there were standout moments, including graduate Will Baumhofer scoring his second triple of the season. Neaves maintained his hitting streak, extending it to six games. Also, impressive was Gibbs, who managed to reach base in a remarkable seven consecutive plate appearances during the series.

App State really turned up the heat, scoring three runs in two separate innings and four more in the ninth, showcasing their talent and determination.

Sunday’s Challenge Against Seton Hall

8-5 despite their valiant efforts. Payton Frehner kicked things off with a powerful three-run home run in the first inning, gaining momentum. The Cougars tied the game at five with a smart sacrifice bunt in the sixth, only to see Seton Hall regain the lead with a two-run shot in the seventh, proving how quickly fortunes can change in baseball.

On the bright side, the Cougars have now hit home runs in four consecutive games, and they successfully stole three bases on Sunday, bringing their total for the season up to 18! Freshman Drew Medley and redshirt freshman Asher Lucas also made their collegiate pitching debuts, adding to the excitement of the weekend.

Looking Ahead

As the Cougars reflect on mixed results from the series, there’s no doubt they will learn and grow from these experiences. Fans eagerly anticipate what’s next for the team as they strive to build on their early season performance. With the spirit in the stands and tenacity on the field, stay tuned for more exhilarating baseball ahead!
