The city of Charleston is buzzing with anticipation as the College of Charleston baseball team prepares to open their 2024 season with a four-game series against the Marshall Thundering Herd. The first game is scheduled for tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. at Patriots Park.
After finishing the 2023 season with a strong 36-22 record, the Cougars are eager to build on their success. Despite being predicted to finish fourth in the preseason CAA coaches poll, the team is determined to prove the predictions wrong and make a run for the conference title.
Junior two-way player Cole Mathis is expected to play a key role for the Cougars this season. Mathis was selected to the Preseason All-CAA team and has also received recognition as a third-team All-American by D1Baseball.com and the NCBWA. His exceptional skills as a first baseman have placed him sixth in D1Baseball’s preseason ranking of the nation’s best first basemen.
The upcoming series against Marshall will mark the fifth meeting between the two programs, with the Cougars currently holding a perfect 4-0 record against the Herd. Their last encounter in February 2011 resulted in an 8-6 victory for Charleston.
Under the leadership of head coach Greg Beals, the Marshall Thundering Herd are looking to bounce back from a challenging 2023 season. Despite finishing with a 16-37 record and a last-place standing in the Sun Belt Conference, the Herd are determined to turn things around this year.
Owen Ayers and Drew Harlow are expected to lead the way for Marshall. Ayers set a single-season program record for doubles last year, while Harlow emerged as a reliable pitcher with a 6-4 record and 52 strikeouts in 45.1 innings.
For fans attending the games at Patriots Park, gates will open one hour before the first pitch. To ensure a smooth entry process, the College of Charleston has implemented a Clear Bag Policy for all athletics events.
Single-game and season tickets are still available for purchase, offering fans the opportunity to support the Cougars throughout the season. Don’t miss the chance to witness exciting college baseball action as Charleston takes on Marshall in their opening series.
Be sure to follow the latest news and updates from the College of Charleston baseball team as they embark on their 2024 season. With a talented roster and high hopes for success, the Cougars are poised to make their mark in the CAA and beyond.
