CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston baseball team is gearing up for a crucial series against Northeastern this weekend at Patriots Point, with CAA Tournament seeding implications at stake. The Cougars will take on the Huskies in a three-game set starting Friday at 4 p.m., followed by matchups on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
Prior to the series finale on Sunday, the Charleston baseball program will honor its seniors with special ceremonies. It will be a bittersweet moment as the senior players take the field for one of the final home series of their collegiate careers.
The Cougars currently hold the second spot in the CAA standings with an impressive 16-4 conference record. A successful series against the third-place Huskies (14-7) could secure Charleston one of the top two seeds and a first-round bye in the upcoming conference tournament. This series will play a crucial role in determining the final seeding heading into the postseason.
Charleston has been on a hot streak, winning 20 of their last 22 games and boasting a 15-2 record in their last six conference series. Northeastern, on the other hand, started strong with a 9-2 record in the CAA but has struggled in recent matchups, splitting their last 10 games including a series loss against NC A&T.
The Cougars and Huskies have a storied history, with Northeastern holding a slight 17-13 lead in the overall series. However, Charleston has had success against Northeastern at Patriots Point, winning eight of their 12 matchups at home. Last year, the teams faced off in a three-game series in Boston, with the Cougars winning one game behind a standout performance by Cole Mathis.
In 2022, the two teams met five times, with Charleston sweeping the regular season series at home while Northeastern got the better of the Cougars in the CAA Tournament. This weekend’s series will be a chance for Charleston to continue their recent success against the Huskies and secure a strong position heading into the postseason.
Following the series against Northeastern, the Cougars will hit the road to face Elon in the final weekend of the regular season. Meanwhile, UNCW, who currently holds a slight half-game lead over Charleston, will take on Delaware as they look to secure the top seed in the conference.
As the regular season winds down, the stakes are high for Charleston as they look to build momentum heading into the CAA Tournament. With a successful series against Northeastern, the Cougars could solidify their position as one of the top contenders in the conference.
