Charleston’s Bar Scene: A Toast to History and Community

Ah, Charleston! A city known for its rich history, Southern charm, and, of course, its vibrant bar scene. With roots tracing back to more than 100 taverns serving thirsty colonists, Charleston has a long-standing tradition of bringing people together over drinks. Fast forward to today, and you’ll find a delightful mix of bars, from cozy hideaways to lively hotspots, all focusing on not only delicious cocktails but also on creating a sense of community.

Discovering Bar Vauté

One standout spot is Bar Vauté, quietly nestled beneath Brasserie La Banque in downtown Charleston. Opened just in 2021, this bar has been referred to as a “bar clandestin hidden in plain sight.” Upon entering, patrons are met with a stunning art deco design illuminated by candlelight, creating a perfect ambiance for a night out. The historic building, steeped in antebellum charm, serves as an intriguing backdrop for what lies within.

According to general manager Tanya Thomas, while the upstairs brasserie might be all about chic dining, the downstairs bar has a bit more grit, offering a laid-back yet sophisticated vibe. “We’re very much experimental with our cocktail list,” Thomas said. One can indulge in innovative drinks like the Corpse Reviver #2—a delightful combination of botanist gin, Lillet, lemon, cointreau, and a splash of absinthe. For those who love classic cocktails, options like the Boulevardier and French 75 are also on hand, paired beautifully with a menu featuring both small and large plates.

Bar Vauté’s Apero hour, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, offers guests an unbeatable deal with $3 oysters and cheese selections that are simply mouthwatering. As the bar fills up with a mix of locals and curious tourists, the hospitality shines through when complimentary bubbles and blinis with caviar are offered to those waiting in line. “This is really a capital for hospitality,” says Thomas, emphasizing how Charleston’s culture revolves around making everyone feel special.

The Charm of Charleston’s Smallest Bar

Speaking of intimacy, it doesn’t get cozier than Charleston’s Smallest Bar. With just four barstools, this pint-sized gem is tucked away in Hutson Alley between two popular restaurants. Open for just over two years, the bar emanates charm with its fishing-themed decor and local art, making it a haven for anyone looking for a quick refreshment.

Human resources manager Amanda Grant shares the excitement of the bar’s uniqueness. “We wanted to create a special spot without all the signed dollar bills that many places use,” she explained. Instead, the bar focuses on a selection of canned cocktails, beers, and frozen beverages, including their standout drink—the Hutson Alley Hooch, a refreshing mix of pineapple moonshine, rum, and coconut cream. The small bites menu featuring fried shrimp and crab dip pairs perfectly with any drink, making it an ideal spot for pre-dinner drinks or intermission snacks during shows at Charleston Music Hall. Guests can sip and stroll through the alley, enjoying their drinks while soaking up the vibrant atmosphere.

A Touch of Europe at Saint Urban’s

Not too far away is the uniquely designed Saint Urban’s, offering a taste of Europe in a cozy 367-square-foot wine bar. Owners Warren Johnson and Chad Besenfelder have turned this space into a delightful wine haven filled with artistic touches from across Europe. Sitting on plush pillows from different countries adds an extra layer of comfort as patrons explore the diverse wine selection and artisanal cheese offerings.

Johnson highlights the essence of the bar: “It feels like family here.” This sentiment rings true as regulars gather and newcomers feel welcomed, creating a heartwarming aura. With a menu comprising small plates of cheese from artisan producers paired with a wide selection of wine and craft cocktails, Saint Urban’s invites you to stay a while. It’s the perfect place for those who appreciate a well-curated wine experience amid friendly conversation.

Conclusion: Raising a Glass to Charleston

As Charleston continues to thrive with its vibrant bar culture, it honors not only its past but also the connections formed within its charming venues. Whether you’re enjoying an experimental cocktail at Bar Vauté, sipping a frozen drink at Charleston’s Smallest Bar, or savoring a glass of wine at Saint Urban’s, Charleston promises a warm welcome and a taste of community that keeps folks coming back for more. So gather some friends, raise a glass, and celebrate everything this wonderful city has to offer!
