If you’ve strolled down Upper King Street in Charleston, you’ve likely noticed the vibrant energy of the area. New restaurants and bars are popping up, and the nightlife is alive with bustling crowds. However, one familiar watering hole, Proof, is stepping into the spotlight with a fresh identity. That’s right! This cocktail haven is transitioning into 100 Proof as of today, October 2, 2024.
The owner, Craig Nelson, has witnessed firsthand the transformation of Upper King Street, where competition is fierce and the local clientele has shifted. Rising liquor liability insurance costs and the challenges posed by police barricades and scarce parking have made keeping the regulars loyal a bit trickier.
“We just kind of felt like we were missing out on some of that business,” Nelson shared candidly, touching on how weekends are no longer the local hangout they once were. Instead, the bar sees more tourists exploring the flashy, colorful streets. In response, Nelson decided it was time for a complete overhaul.
The newly rebranded 100 Proof promises to be a fun and lively spot that leans into the blockbuster cocktail scene Charleston is known for. Instead of traditional tables, you’ll find a more relaxed environment with dim lights, neon accents, and even televisions showcasing everything from music videos to sports—which are perfect for a casual night out.
Nelson is teaming up with Chris “Boston” DiMattia, owner of the Recovery Room Tavern, to redefine the vibe at the bar. After hosting successful disco nights during the Charleston Wine + Food Festival, they decided to use that upbeat energy to breathe new life into Proof.
One of the most thrilling changes is the introduction of a frosé machine and a menu that boasts 100 different shots. But don’t worry if you have a favorite cocktail from the old Proof; approximately eight of their celebrated cocktails will remain available in their usual form. If a guest craves Proof’s iconic gin-and-tonic or the Chinese Takeout—complete with fat-washed Jameson—they can still indulge, as the original bartenders are on hand to whip them up! “We’re tired of being so serious. We just wanted to lighten up,” Nelson said.
The rebranding efforts are aimed at attracting a younger crowd that comes looking for moments to create. Nelson envisions a space where people can gather, laugh, and unwind, all while enjoying delicious cocktails in a lively atmosphere. With fewer tables and more space for movement, it sets the stage for a truly festive vibe that Charleston tourists and locals alike will appreciate.
So, as the sun begins to set and the temperature drops to a comfortable 68°F later tonight, consider heading to 100 Proof. Whether you’re in the mood for a refreshing frosé or a novel shot experience, this bar has evolved to meet the spirit of the time—and it’s sure to be an adventure of flavor and fun.
As Charleston continues to grow and change, local establishments are encouraged to adapt and innovate. 100 Proof is a prime example of embracing new trends while staying true to the core of what makes Charleston’s nightlife irresistible. With an inviting atmosphere that caters to both regulars and newcomers, it’s a must-visit spot to kick off your evening adventures in this charming Southern city.
Keep your eyes peeled this evening as 100 Proof opens its doors, tempting you to enjoy the warmth of community vibes and the thrill of new experiences. Cheers to fresh starts and unforgettable nights ahead!
