As the leaves begin to turn and the weather cools down, Charleston is heating up with vibrant arts events scheduled for this November. Known for its rich cultural tapestry, this city is about to become a bustling hub for art lovers, theatre enthusiasts, and film buffs alike.
Are you ready for a fantastic lineup of events? Here’s a curated list of three happenings that you absolutely won’t want to miss!
Mark your calendars for the First Friday Artwalk in Charleston’s picturesque downtown historic district on November 1st! From 5 PM to 8 PM, grab your friends and family and take a leisurely stroll through dozens of art galleries, all while enjoying light bites and refreshments. This free event has been a beloved tradition in the Holy City for the past two decades.
“Walk into any art gallery during a First Friday Artwalk, and you’ll find an electrifying mix of artists debuting new work, art lovers coming to see the opening exhibitions, and folks just looking to have some fun on a Friday night,” shared Katie Geer, director and co-owner of Meyer Vogl Gallery. With around 40 galleries participating, you can bet there is something captivating for everyone.
If you’re new to the Artwalk, a little tip: show up between 5 and 6 PM for a more intimate experience at the galleries!
Other exciting events kick-off soon after, with the AfroSouth Film Festival returning to downtown Charleston from November 7 to 10. This festival celebrates the rich influence of African-American and Southern culture through film, and it’s now in its third year. The festivities start off with an opening-night mixer that features a documentary highlighting the Gullah roots of jazz, followed by live performances at the Charleston Visitor Center.
The festival expands over the next few days with a range of events, including youth filmmaking workshops, a comedy night, and a tribute to classic musicals like The Wiz. The main event on November 9 will feature independent film screenings, competitions, and workshops designed for filmmakers of all ages, with esteemed guests like acclaimed producer B.K. Fulton and comedian Akintunde.
Ricky Taylor, the founder and executive director of AfroSouth, mentioned, “This year’s festival features the most diverse collections of films thus far.” Exciting, right? Make sure to check out their website for all the juicy details!
You’re in for a treat as Pure Theatre brings the acclaimed musical The Last Five Years to the stage starting November 7. Running through the end of the month, this reimagined production explores the intricacies of a romantic relationship through the lens of time. Starring Charleston’s very own Heather Rice and talented musician Manny Houston, this production delves into the rollercoaster of love, heartbreak, and everything in between.
“I feel so lucky to be able to express myself as an artist and human so fully,” Rice expressed her excitement about the role. With direction by Pure’s Artistic and Executive Director Sharon Graci, this show promises to be heartfelt and cathartic. The performances will take place at 134 Cannon St., and tickets range from $47 to $53, with “pay what you will” options available!
So, there you have it! Whether you’re wandering through charming galleries, celebrating cinematic art, or enjoying a powerful musical, Charleston’s arts scene is ready to captivate you this November. Don’t miss out on these enriching experiences that attempt to capture the essence of love, culture, and creativity—all while enjoying the beautiful Charleston weather!
