Charleston to Celebrate Unveiling of New Art Display by 2024 Lowcountry Artist of the Year

Charleston Welcomes New Art Display

Charleston, S.C. is buzzing with excitement as the Coastal Community Foundation prepares to unveil the stunning new work of the 2024 Griffith-Reyburn Lowcountry Artist of the Year. This special event will take place on Wednesday, October 23, at 6 p.m. at the beautiful City Gallery, and everyone is invited to join in the celebration!

A Celebration of Local Talent

Established back in 2003 by Mike Griffith and Donna Reyburn, the Lowcountry Artist of the Year award aims to support exceptional artists who create pieces that embody the unique lifestyle, culture, and environment of the South Carolina Lowcountry. This year, the award comes with a generous $6,000 grant, designed to help the selected artist cover living expenses while they focus on bringing their creative visions to life.

Mike Griffith shared his passion for this initiative, stating, “We are fond of art in general, particularly Lowcountry art. It’s very special.” He pointed out that, before the establishment of this award, there simply weren’t enough ways for talented Lowcountry artists to gain recognition and receive opportunities similar to those available in other artistic fields.

A Legacy of Support

Since its inception, the Griffith-Reyburn award has been a game-changer in the local art scene, providing over $100,000 in funding to artists and leading to the creation of numerous thoughtful and beautiful artworks. It’s the kind of initiative that truly uplifts the local community, offering artists the chance to showcase their talent and creativity.

Meet This Year’s Recipient

The spotlight this year shines on Jennifer York, an artist who has made quite an impression since moving to Charleston in 2020. Jennifer’s creations are nothing short of extraordinary; she utilizes Tyvek house wrap to cut and fold intricate designs that come to life within vintage suitcases and mirrors. Her work is not just visually stunning but deeply intertwined with the Lowcountry’s landscape and history.

Describing her process, Jennifer says, “I reconfigure local landmarks, natural phenomena, and historical remnants with personal stories into new compositions.” With a focus on layers and patterns, her art invites viewers to meander through each piece, discovering new stories at every turn. Winning this award, she believes, is a tremendous boost to continue pursuing her artistic journey. “It feels like major encouragement to keep up the good work and push my artistic vision and mastery even farther,” she added.

Join the Celebration!

The excitement doesn’t stop at the unveiling of Jennifer’s piece. The reception promises to be a fantastic gathering of art lovers and community members passionate about supporting the arts. While the event is completely free, the organizers kindly ask that attendees RSVP in advance to help them plan accordingly.

So, if you’re in the Charleston area and want to be part of this wonderful occasion, mark your calendars for October 23. It’s a great opportunity to connect with local artists, enjoy the beauty of new art, and celebrate the rich culture that makes the Lowcountry so special.

We hope to see you there, ready to embrace the spirit of Charleston’s artistic community!
