Community Care for Seniors

Charleston’s Heartwarming Efforts for Seniors

In the charming city of Charleston, South Carolina, there’s a wonderful organization dedicated to ensuring that our elderly neighbors are well cared for, especially during tough times. The Charleston Area Senior Citizens is making a real difference in the lives of seniors across the Tri-County area and it’s heartwarming to see all that they do.

Meals on Wheels: Delivering More than Just Food

Every weekday, you’ll see Leroy Commodore, one of the organization’s dedicated drivers, buzzing around town delivering meals through the popular Meals on Wheels program. Leroy does this with a big grin and a joyful attitude, stating, “I do it ’cause it’s fun.” He understands just how crucial these meals are for many seniors, especially those who are homebound. He notes, “A lot of people don’t get nothing. Now some of them have meals but a lot of them don’t have anything to eat. You know, this meal is a meal for them for the day.”

Leroy is just one of the 18 drivers that provide an impressive 650 meals a day throughout Charleston County. But the organization’s mission extends beyond just delivering food. They also run a vibrant senior center that offers a range of activities.

A Safe Space for Seniors

At the senior center, low-income seniors come together, enjoying daily breakfast and participating in various activities, such as exciting games of Bingo. The center opens its doors to anyone who needs a little bit of companionship and fun, and best of all, it’s totally free of charge! Donna Cook, the Executive Director, emphasizes the importance of these interactions: “It’s primarily for low-income seniors who live in Charleston County.”

For those needing an extra helping hand, the organization has an emergency food pantry. If a driver notices that a client requires more food, they can quickly bring back a box from the pantry to help meet their needs. This service is invaluable, especially with how expensive groceries can be nowadays.

Living with Dignity

On the same premises as the senior center is the Ansonborough House, a low-income housing facility specifically for seniors. “We built that in 1984 because we found that so many of our clients needed a safe space to live as they aged,” Donna explains. The rent is based on income, allowing seniors to live comfortably while receiving supportive services that can help them stay in their homes.

This loving organization supports around 1,000 seniors each year, ensuring that none of them are left feeling hungry or forgotten. They are always on the lookout for kind-hearted volunteers to help deliver meals. “We really appreciate volunteers who are willing to commit to one day a week to deliver a home delivered meal route,” Donna says, highlighting the growing number of routes as Charleston continues to expand.

Fun and Engaging Events

But it doesn’t stop there; there are also some exciting fundraisers in the works! For instance, they’re hosting a Smashing Hunger Pickleball Tournament at the Crush Yard in Mount Pleasant on September 13, from 4 to 7 PM. This event promises not just to be fun but also a wonderful way to help raise funds for such a significant cause.

Another highlight on the calendar is the 3rd Annual Shuckin’ for Seniors event, which is set to take place at Commonhouse Aleworks in North Charleston on January 25, from 6 to 8 PM. And let’s not forget the charming senior prom that will be held at the center in early May. Donna mentions, “Many of them didn’t get the opportunity to go to their prom, and it gives us the chance to just love on them and let them enjoy a nice DJ.”

Connect and Contribute

The doors of the senior center are open Monday through Friday from 7 AM to 3 PM, welcoming community members to come by and share information or just offer a friendly chat with seniors. It’s a hub of joy and connection, transforming the lives of many in the community.

If you’re interested in getting involved, whether through volunteering, donating, or attending an event, there’s always a warm welcome awaiting you. The efforts in Charleston truly embody the idea that small acts of kindness can create meaningful change.
