Edward Crouse, a well-known restaurateur in Charleston, recently shared his thoughts after a memorable dinner with his wife, Marie Stitt. The couple spent over $400 during their night out, prompting Crouse to reconsider how their cafes—Baba’s on Cannon and Baba’s on Meeting—could make dining more enjoyable and affordable for everyone. The very next day, they introduced aperitivo hour on Friday and Saturday evenings, serving delicious free Italian snacks from 4 p.m. until close.
“It seemed like a small change for us,” Crouse explained, “but we really wanted to give back to our regulars. It’s something they can look forward to on the weekends.” Not only did this new offering resonate with locals, but tourists also embraced the change. “If that means I’m personally footing the bill for $100 worth of food every week to ensure these people have a blast, then that’s an obvious investment for me. I’m happy to do that,” he added.
For Crouse, this goes beyond simply offering snacks. It’s a way to reconnect with cherished memories of Italy, the place where he and Marie first met and continually draw inspiration. “The reason we opened Baba’s was to make great food, drink, and service available at an affordable price point,” he shared.
But Baba’s isn’t the only player in the aperitivo game. High-end Italian eatery Costa, located at 320 Broad Street, has also embraced this culture by launching its own aperitivo hours from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays. Guests can choose from a range of discounted spritz cocktails, wine, and coastal Italian snacks, with offerings like marinated olives and toast topped with savory Cantabrian anchovies.
Costa’s general manager, Alessando Piliego, explained their vision: “We wanted to create a relaxed and social space where people can unwind after work or gather with friends. It’s all about capturing the essence of Italian hospitality.”
Another delightful spot, Frannie & the Fox, located at 181 Church Street, is taking the aperitivo experience even further. From 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday through Saturday, the restaurant offers discounted bites like arancini, pork and beef meatballs, and seasonal mozzarella. Chef Daniel Dalton described this as “a cherished Italian ritual of drinks and light snacks that has become an integral part of the Frannie & the Fox experience.”
Dalton emphasized the goal of creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. “It’s all about unwinding with great company and exceptional food,” he mentioned. With a charming courtyard and greenhouse setting, guests can indulge in delightful dishes and drinks while enjoying the beauty of Charleston.
As you can see, Charleston’s culinary scene is embracing the joy of aperitivo hour, making it a wonderful time for locals and visitors alike to unwind at the end of the workday.
