BERLIN — At the ILA Berlin Air Show 2024 held in Berlin, Germany from June 5-9, Charleston Air Force Reservists along with other active-duty members, demonstrated their air mobility capabilities and fostered international partnerships. The reservists belonged to the U.S. Air Force Reserve 315th Airlift Wing based at Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina and they took the center stage by showcasing a C-17 Globemaster III aircraft.
The ILA Berlin Air Show, known in German as the Internationale Luft- und Raumfahrtausstellung (ILA), is a major global aviation event attracting over 85,000 attendees including aerospace enthusiasts, trade show exhibitors, and aircrew from around the globe. The event is a platform for aerospace and defense companies to display emerging technologies to prospective buyers of the world.
Apart from showcasing aircraft, the event also provides an opportunity for nations to discuss their interoperability and share the best practices in aviation. This resonates with the underlying aims of the airshow, which include promoting standardization and interoperability of equipment with NATO allies and other potential coalition partners.
Reflecting the U.S. commitment to European allies, members of the 300th Airlift Squadron under the 315th Airlift Wing displayed the C-17 Globemaster III in the air show. The C-17 aircraft is celebrated for its exceptional airlift capabilities, facilitating swift transport of personnel, equipment, and humanitarian aid to regions worldwide.
Further to the U.S. Air Force Reserve, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, and U.S. Army, also took part in the show. Aircraft including F-35 Lighting II, KC-46 Pegasus, two F-16 Fighting Falcons, RQ-7 Shadow, U.S. Navy P-8 Poseidon, U.S. Army UH-60 Black Hawk, and U.S. Army AH-64 Apache, graced the event. The event was also supported by more than 200 U.S. military personnel, aircrew, aircraft maintainers, security personnel, public relations officers, and administrative support staff.
German Air Force Lt. Col. Gerald “Titan” Gross, a Eurofighter Typhoon pilot, praised the presence of U.S. Air Force aircraft on the ramp. According to Gross, the opportunity to interact with aviators from around the world is a significant aspect of the Berlin Air Show, as it allows for an exchange of ideas and constructive discussions on interoperability. He also expressed gratitude for the U.S. Air Force for their continuous airlift support with the C-17, which has been of significant assistance in his own missions in Afghanistan.
The Charleston Reservists, in particular, showcased the value and unique depth of skills that reservists bring to the U.S. airlift capabilities. Many of these reservists balance their military service with their civilian careers as airliners or cargo pilots, thereby bringing a wealth of experience and a broader technical skill set that accentuates their professional performance.
Maj. Gregory Marx, a C-17 pilot of the 300 AS, noted the contribution of reservists to the nation’s defense organ over and above their civic responsibilities. He emphasized the knowledge that reserve pilots gain from their work in airlines finds applications in the military, particularly in international settings.
The congregation of global aviation enthusiasts and professions at the Berlin Air Show presented an opportunity for nations to showcase their aircraft and discuss pertinent issues regarding aviation practices and interoperability. The participation of Charleston Reservists and other U.S. military personnel exhibited U.S. engagement in enhancing its international defense cooperation objectives through these dialogues.
