Tragic Collision in Charleston: One Dead, Several Injured

Charleston County, S.C. – In the early hours of Wednesday morning, a serious accident unfolded on Savannah Highway that has left one person dead and several others injured. The incident, which involved two construction vehicles, occurred around 3 a.m. near the intersection of Savannah Highway and Briarcliff Drive.

The Accident

According to reports from the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, Kendall Hawkins, a 45-year-old resident of Awendaw, was driving one of the construction vehicles while pulling a trailer. This trailer was carrying three passengers who were busy collecting traffic cones along the roadside. Unfortunately, Hawkins made an illegal U-turn to head south on Savannah Highway. In a tragic turn of events, he turned directly into the path of another construction vehicle driven by Rockarius King, a 33-year-old from Ladson.

The impact of the collision caused a chaotic scene. The three passengers in Hawkins’ trailer were ejected from their seats and landed on the road, resulting in serious injuries for all involved. Emergency services rushed to the scene to provide help, transporting Hawkins, King, and the three passengers to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Tragic Outcome

Despite the swift response from first responders, one of the passengers sadly succumbed to their injuries at the hospital. The name of the deceased has not yet been released by the authorities, but our hearts go out to their family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.

Legal Consequences

As the investigation unfolds, both drivers are facing serious legal troubles. Kendall Hawkins has been charged with two counts of Felony Driving Under the Influence. On the other hand, Rockarius King has been charged with Driving Under the Influence in the First Degree and having an Open Container in a Motor Vehicle.

The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit is actively investigating the crash to gather more details about what transpired.
