Celebrate Carolina Day in Charleston, SC

Charleston, South Carolina is gearing up to celebrate Carolina Day with a series of historic and family-friendly events. The day marks South Carolina’s pivotal role in the American Revolutionary War, and is hosted annually by the Historic Charleston Foundation (HCF). The commemoration activities are planned to coincide with the Palmetto Society of Charleston’s annual parade.

About Carolina Day

Carolina Day is a long-standing tradition that dates back to 1777. The day celebrats the historic victory at the Battle of Sullivan’s Island, which took place on June 28, 1776. This battle is often recognized as the first significant military victory in America’s fight for independence from Great Britain. Charleston residents and visitors alike gather to pay homage to the courage and determination of the individuals who fought in this pivotal battle.

HCF’s Carolina Day Event

The HCF is organizing a family event in the garden of the Nathaniel Russell House featuring historic games, snacks, crafts, and storytelling. Visitors aged 21 years and older are allowed to enjoy mimosas as part of the celebrations. Subsequently, guests are encouraged to either join the Carolina Day parade that begins at Washington Square Park at 11:30 a.m. or show their support by lining Meeting Street.

The ticket to the HCF’s event includes light refreshments, breakfast bites, and a self-guided tour of the Nathaniel Russell House beginning at 10 a.m. Children aged 3 years and under are admitted for free, while tickets for those aged 2-20 years cost $10 and adults aged 21 years and older need to pay $20.

The Carolina Day Parade

The Palmetto Society of Charleston hosts the iconic Carolina Day parade each year. This vibrant display of community spirit and solidarity begins at Washington Square Park and concludes at the beautiful White Point Gardens. The parade is free and open for all, welcoming residents and tourists to participate in the celebration and resonate the sense of pride and honor associated with the day.
