In the beautiful city of Charleston, a remarkable woman is proving that age is just a number and strength comes from within. Meet Cookie Finkelstein, an incredible 81-year-old resident of South Bay at Mount Pleasant. With over 30 years of battling cancer not once, not twice, but six different times, Cookie is not just a survivor but a beacon of hope for many. She embodies resilience, turning her personal struggles into a driving force for cancer awareness, research, and support.
Cookie’s medical journey is nothing short of astounding. She’s faced two bouts of breast cancer, plus challenges with lung cancer, bladder cancer, chronic leukemia, and melanoma.“I’m an anomaly to doctors. None of these were metastatic or led to one another,” she shares with a smile. Despite these harrowing episodes, Cookie’s vibrant personality and zest for life have never diminished.
This year, Cookie and her fellow residents from South Bay joined forces as part of a dynamic 24-member team participating in the annual fundraising event, LOWVELO. This initiative supports groundbreaking cancer research at the MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, the only National Cancer Institute-designated center in South Carolina. The sixth anniversary of LOWVELO is made even more special as it marks the second year senior living residents were invited to participate in a unique and tailored way.
Last year, the creative minds at South Bay launched a pilot program that was met with phenomenal success. Instead of the traditional cycling event where participants get sponsored for biking, residents aimed to meet their own fitness goals based on their capabilities. Walking, swimming, and even using exercise machines were on the table! This year, not only did South Bay continue this exciting option, but it was also made available to other senior living communities and schools.
Earlier this year, residents diligently set and tracked their fitness and fundraising goals for LOWVELO. Many opted to walk, marking their progress indoors, in the pool, or out in the lovely Charleston weather. Among them, Cookie set a goal of 50 miles. But guess what? She far exceeded it! “I’m very motivated because of the cause, and the team spirit here was wonderful,” Cookie beams, illustrating the power of camaraderie fueled by a shared mission.
Although Cookie finds it challenging to ask others for financial support, she didn’t let that stop her. In an inspiring display of commitment, she proudly fulfilled her goal of raising $1,000 entirely on her own. So far, the hardworking South Bay team has racked up an impressive $8,950 for LOWVELO 2024. With continued donations rolling in, they expect to surpass $10,000 by the start of the new year!
Comfort Richardson, the wellness director at South Bay, shared that residents have been active volunteers throughout their lives. They are thrilled to have the opportunity to support this noble cause and give back to their greater community through their participation. It’s truly heartwarming to see how a group of determined individuals can come together to make such a significant difference.
As Cookie continues her flourishing journey, she’s not just living proof of endurance but also a stellar ambassador for cancer awareness and support. With her warm heart and courageous spirit, she inspires others to join the fight against cancer, improving not only their lives but also the lives of countless others facing similar battles. After all, in Cookie’s words, “Life is a gift, and I want to give back and make a difference.”
