Charleston welcomes a unique and innovative venture, Philosophers & Fools, a bookstore combined with a bar that is located at 50 Bogard St., Ste. A. The grand opening was in March this year, marking a new chapter in the city’s business and cultural scene.
The concept of Philosophers & Fools was thought up by Jenny Ferrara and her partner Michael. The duo, both ardent bibliophiles, naturally linked their love for reading with the pleasure of a good glass of wine or cold beer. The idea was to cultivate a space that stimulated intellectual conversation and relaxation, and thus Philosophers & Fools was born.
Craft beers, sustainable/organic wines, hot and iced coffees, teas, craft sodas, and seltzers make up the drink offerings at the shop. Alcohol prices are affordable, ensuring quality is not compromised. Moreover, snacks available include freshly popped popcorn, baked items sourced from Sugar Bakeshop, and three varieties of hot pressed sandwiches also known as “toasties”.
Philosophers & Fools boasts an expansive collection of new books across a variety of genres. Specializing in both fiction and non-fiction books, they also cater to the younger generation with a selection of children’s books. The establishment is open from Tuesday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and on Sundays, 12 to 5 p.m.
Philosophers & Fools regularly runs a unique book and beverage pairing initiative on their social media channels every Thursday. A memorable take was pairing the wine Fiction, a red blend from Field Recordings of California, with four multi-narrative fiction novels. Each grape of the wine bringing a layer, alike the narratives of the novels.
New books, wines, beers, and potential events keep Philosophers & Fools buzzing. They recently announced their potential events and new bi-weekly offerings on their social media platforms.
Jenny Ferrara recently shared two reader delights: ‘James’ by Percival Everett and ‘The Paris Novel’ by Ruth Reichl. The former is a powerful reimagining of Huckleberry Finn from Jim’s perspective. The latter interweaves themes of self-discovery, culinary marvels, chosen family, and personal evolution, notable for food enthusiasts due to Reichl’s background as a food critic.
Philosophers & Fools anticipates the announcement of prospective in-store events. This innovative venture continues to provide a fresh blend of literature and libations to the Charleston community.
