Boeing Learning Lab Under Construction in Charleston

Construction has commenced on a groundbreaking project in Charleston, S.C. – the Boeing Learning Lab. Located at the Maritime Center, this state-of-the-art educational facility is anticipated to usher in a new era of learning and innovation in the region.

The waterfront venue is slated to be finished by the end of the current year, with students beginning to utilize its resources and opportunities in 2025. The lab is expected to further educational growth in the area and provide enriching experiences for all ages.

Design Details and Progress

On Wednesday, the City of Charleston’s architectural review board convened to assess the lab’s remodeling plans. The board discussed a host of design nuances, such as the sealant color between windows – a minor refined detail that the project architect presented and the panel duly approved.

What the Learning Lab Entails

Bryan Thill, Director of Education at the South Carolina Aquarium, hailed the Boeing Learning Lab as a transformational development in education. The lab will expand the range of programming that the Aquarium currently offers.

“We’re planning for more than just school-based programs”, explained Thill. “From early morning mindfulness sessions at sunrise to STEM development and career training for teenagers, and even adult learning programs, the resources at the Boeing Learning Lab will be diverse.”

Support and Anticipation

Councilman Mike Seekings affirmed the city’s backing for the project, commenting that this lab will be the first of its kind in Charleston. “This center presents an excellent opportunity to educate people from a young age about the environmental challenges we’ll face in future, like sea level rise and global warming”, stated Seekings. “We’re committing to the education of our future leaders. They will learn about what vital steps need to be taken and they’ll be equipped to execute them.”

Seekings also expressed his personal interest in attending a few of the learning lab’s programs to enhance his understanding of Charleston’s harbor and its sea life.

Next Steps

The aquarium is now set to evaluate its operational blueprint to determine how many staff and volunteers will be necessary to run the learning lab efficiently. This is an essential step toward ensuring the smooth operation of the lab on its launch later this year.
