Charleston is set to come alive this February with the College of Charleston’s vibrant calendar of activities honoring Black History Month. Kicking off the month with engaging events ranging from lectures and film screenings to workshops and community activities, there’s something for everyone to enjoy and learn from!
A Kick-off with the State of Black CofC Summit
The celebrations start on Saturday, February 1, 2025, with the State of Black CofC Summit, happening from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Septima Clark Memorial Auditorium. This summit brings together Black faculty, staff, students, and community partners to share insights, discuss experiences, and strategize on improving the College experience for Black individuals. With around 130 students already registered, it looks like this is going to be an impactful day filled with discussions about mentorship and creating safe spaces for Black voices within academia.
Thought-Provoking Lectures
Continuing the celebration, there will be a variety of lectures throughout the month. On Monday, February 3, Whitney Battle-Batiste will take center stage at 7 p.m. in the Simons Center, diving into a fascinating discussion about how materials and objects shape our experiences as a community. Following that, on February 10, renowned civil rights photographer Cecil Williams will share his story and work in a compelling lecture that promises to highlight the power of photography in activism.
Sports and Celebration!
For all the sports enthusiasts, don’t miss out on the Women’s Basketball Black History Month Celebration on February 9 at 2 p.m. in TD Arena! This event is not just about the game; attendees can enjoy delicious food, free gifts, and a heartfelt performance of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” by faculty and staff. It’s a great way to combine school spirit with a celebration of culture!
Engaging Acitivity Options
If you prefer to explore the campus, the “Untold Stories” Campus Guided Walking Tour on February 11 offers a unique chance to learn about the diverse histories that have shaped the College of Charleston. It’s free and begins at 10 a.m. at Porter’s Lodge. Plus, later that evening, don’t miss the film screening of Lowndes County and the Road to Black Power at the Avery Research Center from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. This documentary will shed light on essential moments in Black history, making it a must-see.
Workshops to Spark Conversation
As the month progresses, several workshops and discussions will center on critical topics. On February 19, join a student workshop titled “Why the History of Slavery Matters Today” from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., allowing participants to explore the lasting impacts of slavery. This is followed by a thought-provoking lecture that evening led by Shannon Eaves, focusing on sexual violence and its historical context.
A Taste of Gullah Geechee Culture
Capping off these enriching events is “A Taste of Charleston: A Night of Gullah Geechee Culture” on February 26 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Avery Research Center. This event promises to be a delightful culinary journey celebrating the unique Gullah Geechee culture, offering delicious food and insights into the heritage that shapes the region.
