This year, the College of Charleston is rolling out a fantastic lineup of events to celebrate Black History Month, and there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re into lectures, film screenings, or even basketball games, they’ve got you covered!

Kicking Off the Month with the State of Black CofC Summit

Mark your calendars for February 1st because the celebration begins with the inaugural State of Black CofC Summit running from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Education Center. This event will feature panels and discussions that highlight the experiences of Black individuals at the college. It’s a great opportunity for reflection and learning, and it promises to be a lively discussion!

Thought-Provoking Lectures to Feed Your Mind

On February 3rd at 7 p.m., Whitney Battle-Batiste, a respected professor from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, will dive into contemporary reflections on Black materiality. This lecture is bound to provoke meaningful conversations and expand your understanding of historical and modern contexts.

Celebrating with Community Events

Community spirit will shine on February 9th at 2 p.m. during the Women’s Basketball Black History Month Celebration at TD Arena. This event is not just about sports; it’s about coming together as a community! Enjoy some delicious food and fantastic performances while you cheer on the players. Exploring History through Film and Tours

If you’re a film lover, don’t miss out on February 11th. There will be a special screening of “Lowndes County and the Road to Black Power” from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.. This powerful documentary is a must-see! Earlier that day, from 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m., join the Untold Stories guided walking tour highlighting diverse narratives in the College’s history. It’s a great way to explore the richness of our past!

Engage in Discussions on Diversity and Activism

On February 12th, the campus community is invited to join the “Donuts and DEI” event from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. This relaxing event encourages open discussions about diversity, equity, and inclusion—because who doesn’t love donuts while diving into important conversations? Later that day, Ash Williams, an abortion and death doula, will lead a discussion addressing their activism. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to learn about various vital topics!

Diving Deeper into History

The events continue with another film screening on February 13th featuring “Emergency”, followed by a discussion. Also, join the Indigenous Voices Series that same day, where Fay A. Yarbrough will discuss her book, “Choctaw Confederates.” This series promises to enrich our understanding of diverse histories and experiences.

Workshops and Lectures Galore!

On February 19th, don’t miss a workshop titled “Why the History of Slavery Matters Today.” Shannon Eaves will be leading this impactful discussion at 10:30 a.m., followed by another lecture by Eaves later that day discussing her book on sexual violence and American slavery. This will be a crucial opportunity for dialogue and education.

Ending the Month with Inspiration and Culture

Get ready to celebrate on February 25th with the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration hosted by the Black History Intercollegiate Consortium, featuring performances and discussions that will uplift the community. And on February 26th, join in for A Taste of Charleston: A Night of Gullah Geechee Culture, a special dinner and discussion packed with cultural experiences.
