Charleston Hosts Annual Walk for Autism

Over the weekend, hundreds of individuals gathered in Hampton Park, Charleston, taking part in the annual Walk for Autism-Charleston. The event, a cornerstone activity of Autism Awareness Month, supports those with autism and their families by helping them connect with various resources and people who share their experience.

More than Just a Walk

This charitably inclined gathering is fashioned to be a transformative event that provides an avenue for increased autism awareness and support through fun activities. Attendees enjoyed a day teeming with live music, jump castles, therapy dog interaction, and even a silent auction. Patrons also had the opportunity to enjoy merchandise shopping and received haircuts from GreatClips, reflecting the organizers’ intent to make this annual event much more than a simple walk.

An Expression of Love and Care

Describing the event as a “magical day,” Erin Pruitt, the director of Walk for Autism-Charleston, attested to the commitment and dedication that went into its organization. “This has been a labor of love for the last year. It is amazing to finally see all our hard work come to fruition. It has been a beautiful day,” Pruitt expressed.

Fundraising for Scholarships

A significant part of the day was dedicated to raising funds for “scholarships.” These scholarships are financial aids designed to support families with accessibility programs expenses or alternative therapy sessions. Therapies could include music, horseback riding, and swim lessons for persons with autism. Proof of the event’s success was seen in the impressive turnout and the funds raised. Organizers reported approximately $6,000 raised from Venmo donations alone, showcasing attendees’ generosity and support.
