Sponsor Our ArticlesCharleston has officially commenced the Ashley River Crossing project, a pedestrian and cyclist bridge linking West Ashley and downtown. Estimated at $74 million, the bridge aims to improve community connectivity and reduce car dependency. Slated for completion by June 2027, the project involves prominent architectural and engineering firms, showcasing a commitment to enhancing urban mobility and promoting eco-friendly transportation.
In a move that signifies the City’s unwavering commitment to enhancing connectivity and accessibility, Charleston officially broke ground on the much-anticipated Ashley River Crossing project on January 9, 2025. The project, aimed primarily at improving access for pedestrians and cyclists in the region, represents a monumental milestone after a lengthy journey of over 15 years filled with planning and revisions.
The new bridge will serve as a crucial link between the communities of West Ashley and downtown Charleston, allowing seamless integration with prominent sites such as the West Ashley Greenway, Brittlebank Park, and the scenic Ashley River Walk. City officials envision this bridge not merely as a physical structure; it will stand as a symbolic connection that bridges the gap between neighborhoods and promotes greater interaction among residents.
What began as a modest project estimate of $6 million has skyrocketed to a jaw-dropping estimate of approximately $74 million. The overall project cost is expected to approach $100 million, largely bolstered by federal funding. Charleston County is contributing around $3 million, while the state has committed approximately $5.3 million to support the initiative. This staggering increase in budget can be attributed to rising material costs and several proposed design modifications.
The LS3P and SeamonWhiteside firms have been selected as the project architects, while MasTec Civil will take the reins as the general contractor. A distinguished cohort of engineers, including COWI Engineering, JMT, TranSystems, and ESP, will be involved in executing the design and structural integrity of the bridge. Additionally, HDR Engineering has been designated as the project manager, ensuring that the development remains on track and aligned with community expectations.
Construction is slated for completion by June 2027, promising to provide unparalleled views of the ongoing progress without interfering with the flow of vehicular traffic. The bridge is designed to facilitate uninterrupted travel from outer West Ashley to the Isle of Palms, making it a preferred route for pedestrians and cyclists seeking a safe alternative to existing, hazardous travel paths.
The Ashley River Crossing is more than just a standalone project; it forms an integral part of a broader initiative focused on developing a cohesive mobility network throughout Charleston. By providing safe, accessible routes for pedestrians and cyclists, the project aims to reduce the dependency on cars and encourage environmentally-friendly modes of transportation.
Despite the financial escalations, City Council has yet to approve an additional $8.5 million for further design modifications proposed by the Mayor. City officials have assured residents that construction activities will continue without delay, even amid budgetary adjustments. Future enhancements may include additional connections to medical facilities via Lockwood Drive and Bee Street, as well as potential docking points leading to Brittlebank Park and a proposed southern route toward the city’s marina.
With its blend of accessibility and aesthetic value, the Ashley River Crossing project stands poised to redefine urban mobility in Charleston, all while nurturing a spirit of community connection and environmental consciousness.
