Charleston County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the arrest of a man on Monday in connection with a fatal shooting that transpired on Wadmalaw Island on February 16.
The suspect, David Matthew Legare, aged 34, was apprehended on Friday. Official online jail records indicate that he has been charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.
Around 10 p.m. on February 16, deputies were called to the 6200 block of Maybank Highway. There they discovered a man who was reportedly suffering from gunshot injuries, as announced by the Sheriff’s Office spokesperson, Alexis Douglas.
The victim was later identified by the coroner’s office as Elijah Jones, a 38-year-old from North Charleston.
According to the coroner’s report, Jones was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 10:27 p.m.
Investigators have revealed that the deadly shooting appears to have been the result of a confrontation between Legare and Jones, as various details surrounding the incident continue to emerge.
