In a significant development, Charleston-based healthcare company, Afaxys, LLC, has announced its new legal status as a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC). The company, recognized for its commitment to public health professionals and their patients, especially in sexual and reproductive health, will continue its dedication towards serving the over 31 million Americans who are dependent on the public health safety net.
The step towards becoming a PBC, a designation that’s usually not pursued by traditional corporations focused solely on profit, makes evident Afaxys’ commitment to amalgamate its business operations with a social purpose. This strategy is aimed at fostering the creation of long-term value and aligning with the company’s mission.
Afaxys was established in 2008 with an aim to ensure a well-managed and long-lasting supply of mission-critical contraceptives and other medical supplies required by public health family planning providers. “While our mission has evolved as our business has grown, our true purpose remains steady – to do right by society,” stated Ronda Dean, President, CEO, and Co-Founder of Afaxys. Dean manifested pride in Afaxys’ transformation to a PBC while continuing to strive for realizing the significant societal purpose they envisioned more than a decade ago.
As a Public Benefit Corporation, Afaxys partners uniquely with public health as well as private industry. The goal is to ensure that healthcare providers have stable pricing and reliable access to the products and services required to treat their patients. Afaxys operates a family of companies under two wholly owned subsidiaries: Afaxys Pharma, LLC and Afaxys Group Services, LLC (AGS). Afaxys Pharma provides a broad portfolio of branded and generic contraceptives to the public healthcare market. On the other hand, AGS is a strategic sourcing operation that negotiates favorable pricing across a wide base of products and services through its Group Purchasing Organization and emapp.
