In a setback for animal welfare in the community, four dogs, comprising two adult dogs and two puppies, were found abandoned outside of the Charleston Animal Society in North Charleston, South Carolina. The unfortunate incident occurred during the tumultuous thunderstorm that hit the region last Saturday.
The Charleston Animal Society reported that a woman was sighted dropping the dogs off at the shelter’s gates around 8 a.m. during the peak of the storm. The distressed animals made an attempt to follow her vehicle as she sped away, narrowly escaping being run over.
With ongoing storm conditions and the rush of speeding vehicles on the adjacent Remount Road, the pups’ predicament further worsened. However, a local North Charleston firefighter, as well as two North Charleston police officers, stepped in at the crucial moment and managed to rescue the abandoned dogs from impending harm.
Following the successful rescue operation by local law enforcement and first responders, the Charleston Animal Society team took over and transported the terrified, soaked canines safely into the confines of the shelter.
Reports from the shelter indicate that upon arrival, the dogs were visibly shaken and exhibited signs of anxiety. Unknown surroundings and the aftermath of the traumatic storm left the abandoned pets frightened and confused.
In view of the incident, the Charleston Animal Society has issued a public appeal. They are urging anyone possessing pertinent information about the dogs or the identity of the woman who left them onsite, to come forward and assist.
